Cena enjoying more serious film role

NEW ORLEANS — Wrestling star John Cena said he’s enjoying the challenge of acting in his very first dramatic film. The “WWE Monday Night RAW” star’s only two previous movies — 2006’s “The Marine” and last year’s “12 Rounds” — were action films that involved “blowing things up” and “dodging bullets,” Cena said.

It’s still all about the story for Harrison Ford

LOS ANGELES — Harrison Ford speaks in a measured tone and fiddles with a pen cap as he explains that, for him, making movies isn’t about performances. His characters might be brave like Han Solo, brilliant like Jack Ryan or brash like Indiana Jones — so long as they serve the story.

Mel Gibson’s return to the big screen is mostly a bore

Imagine yourself sitting in an empty room, staring at a completely blank sheet of white canvas. Now imagine staring at that canvas for just under two hours, and every once in a while, a random person comes out of nowhere and shoots it with a paintball gun.

Why Blair can never admit to regrets

If only PD James had been on the Chilcot committee. After six hours of watching Tony Blair effortlessly deflect and disarm his interrogators at the Queen Elizabeth II centre on Friday, how could one not be struck by the contrast with the courteous evisceration that James recently performed on the BBC’s director-general?

The real north-south divide crippling Britain

Should your salary be the same if you move from Scunthorpe to Southampton? Should the rate for a job be identical in Newcastle, Newquay and Newark? For at least 5m people it is because they work for public employers with national bargaining arrangements and uniform pay scales.

Out of the closet: our growing acceptance of gays

The British Social Attitudes survey — which asks people about their views on politics and social matters such as crime, drugs and relationships — makes fascinating reading. Articles with lots of percentages in them are always a bit of a turn-off, I find, but do persevere because the numbers are really interesting, for once

The tormented eel is slithering out of existence

It is strange to think of something slimy, snake-like and nocturnal as reassuring, but it seems as if we are beginning at last to value the extraordinary eel just as it may be about to disappear. Over the past three decades the many unsolved mysteries about the eel’s unique life-cycle have been joined by one more: why has it declined to the extent that it is now classed globally as a critically endangered fish

OT Lesson 5 Study Notes: Moses 5-7

As always, remember that these are questions for studying the reading assigned more than for planning the lesson itself. Even then, you are certainly going to find more questions here than you can deal with in one study session, though not, perhaps, more than you can deal with in a week. However, that said, the lesson itself has turned out to be more than I could deal with in a week

Anna Nicole Smith’s Lost Treasure

Jewelry tales of the rich and famous never cease to amaze me – from the extravagant acquisitions of New York’s tony billionaires (Brooke Astor, et al) to celebrity jewelry boxes full of baubles worth more than our mortgages. The latest entry in the latter category concerns the late Anna Nicole Smith, whose financial woes were well-reported following the death of her gazillionaire ‘husband’ back in the 90s.

Getty Images Do you make common laundry mistakes? We’ve previously discussed the challenges of fitting laundry into the juggle (a topic regularly requested by our readers.) Now, according to my WSJ colleague Ellen Byron , it seems that in our haste to get the laundry done, we’re actually doing it all wrong.

Start a weekend morning with a breakfast special

Paying attention to breakfast this week, here is a recipe for pancakes that might make a weekend morning a little more special.
