It’s not just the Greeks – beware of all the siesta states

A new maxim for a new age: beware of Greeks bearing hastily written promissory notes. Or, actually, just beware of Greeks, full stop. It’s not looking good for them, is it?

The best tip for women wanting to have it all is: don’t bother

A wave of sympathy broke over the media sisterhood last week when the writer Allison Pearson confessed in her Daily Mail column that she was suffering from depression and was therefore no longer able to carry on; she said goodbye to her readers. The Guardian was quick to respond with dramatic headlines: “Women on the verge”, “Why do so many women have depression?” and “All too much”.

Taking Happiness at Face Value

“…wickedness never was happiness.” — Alma 41:10 I’ve only ever heard this phrase from the scriptures used as an encouragement toward righteousness — “if you are wicked, then you won’t be happy, so be righteous!” But reducing the scripture to a causal relationship like “if ( wicked ) then { not happy }” necessarily implies the contrapositive: “if ( happy ) then { not wicked }”. Both of these readings reduce the rich context of the passage to a logical proposition, and these sorts of shallow reductions don’t often translate well to the complexity of real life.

How dare you diss Mrs Duffy? That’s my aunt

The most poignant moment of that dreadful day in Rochdale was when Gillian Duffy asked the Sky reporter exactly what the Prime Minister had said about her in his car. You could see from her beaming expectation that she’d counted on a “marvellous woman!” at the very least. Maybe even a chuckling “she should be in the Cabinet”

The internet election that never happened

When I covered Barack Obama’s campaign trail, I was struck by the incredible political activity and energy on the web. The targeted e-mails, the fundraising, the co-ordinated news releases and the way in which Facebook and other social networks came into play created a level of participation we had never seen before

This week the presiding bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints unveiled the first solar-powered LDS meetinghouse in Farmington, Utah. The building is one of five green prototypes being developed for LDS chapels in Utah, Arizona, and Nevada—and the building program will eventually expand across the US and around the world. The official press release cites other environmentally-friendly building innovations in the Farmington facility, including high efficiency heating and cooling system that can interface with the solar power equipment, xeriscaped grounds,  plumbing fixtures that cut water use by more than 50 percent, and Low-E Solarban 70 windows that block 78 percent of the sun’s heat energy

The Little Experience – Owl Review…

We had a ‘House Day’ today – staying in the Casa, mooching, cooking, cleaning (crafting!) and LittleFish wanted to sew her Owl Kit that was a birthday gift… It is by “The Little Experience” Naturally we scrapped the instructions and use the sewing machine – you could easily sew by hand but my little one is just not that patient. The OWLS are fabulous darling! The printed pieces are just darling and we enjoyed it

The Role of Mobile in Retail Shopping

Last week I concluded my post by mentioning the potential of mobile devices when we’re out and about shopping in stores. Mobile retail can begin pre-purchase with advertising, product searches and product reviews/comparisons. When we get to the store, we might decide to quickly run a price comparison, stock check, use those mobile coupons that we’ve

Europe’s economy is the sick man of the world

It wasn’t very nice to liken the Greek debt crisis to the Ebola virus but, as a former Mexican finance minister, Angel Gurria knows a thing or two about contagion and financial sickness. “When you realise you have it,” he said, “you have to cut your leg off to survive.” As the head of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development was standing next to Angela Merkel, Germany’s tough-minded chancellor, at the time, his message will surely have got through.
