Betty White’s charity: Show your appreciation by supporting the Morris Animal Foundation!

It’s been years since I’ve watched an episode of Saturday Night Live all the way through and laughed harder at the last sketch than at the first.

Sequel a bit of a letdown, but still a "fun ride"

A movie franchise can only take us by surprise once, and by that measure, “Iron Man 2″ is a preordained letdown. But so much of what gave the first film its gas — the sass, the pizzazz, the ironic amusement of cast and script at the very idea of a rich, party-animal arms dealer (Robert Downey Jr.) remaking himself and the world with an ultimate-weapon armored suit — is still here. If the morality, the pathos of death, the tenderness of the would-be romance between Tony Stark/Iron Man and his assistant, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), are missing, “Iron Man 2″ is still a fun ride.

Mickey Rourke wrestled with Russian role for ‘Iron Man 2′

Mickey Rourke was jailed on a recent trip to Russia. That wouldn’t be news, except this time the hell-raising actor was doing research. His voluntary three-hour lockup in Moscow’s notorious Butyrka Prison was part of his preparation to play Ivan Vanko, an inventor-turned-convict-turned-bionic-bad-guy, in “Iron Man 2.”

‘Friday Night Lights’ continues to reinvent itself

High school may mark the beginning of adulthood, but in the fictitious town of Dillon, Texas, it’s primarily the time one is forced to abandon childish things, whether it’s the roar of adoring football fans or the notion that you’ll live happily ever after with the hottie from your homeroom.

At 88, Betty White continues to amaze

It’s been a banner year for actress Betty White in a career as remarkable for its longevity as for the diversity of those who would call themselves Betty White fans. White, 88, is the rare Hollywood star whose fan base spans multiple generations. While most entertainment personalities are popular for a period and may later stage a comeback, White never disappeared from the public eye

Nick’s ready to dance – but to whose tune?

After the hung parliament comes an Alice in Wonderland moment, the lobster quadrille. “Will you, won’t you, join the dance?” sighs David Cameron to Nick Clegg. The Liberal Democrat leader is prepared to trip the light fantastic, but is his party willing to follow him onto the floor?

Cut Scotland loose – then we’ll have a fair voting system

‘Wow,” said a wide-eyed young Liberal Democrat voter babe, staring over my shoulder on Friday at a coloured election map of Britain. “England is, like, totally blue.” How true. Huge swathes of England are Conservative.

Cameron’s plan B for the Asda election

David Cameron has got what he wanted, but not in the way that he wanted it. Ever since he became leader of the Conservative party, Cameron had concentrated on appealing to the Liberal Democrats, and in particular to those who have voted for that party in recent elections.

Lembit dumped and Jacqui ditched – what a top night

Congratulations to the voters of Montgomeryshire for that well-aimed meteor they sent crashing into Lembit Opik’s misshapen head: a huge, righteous swing of 13.2 per cent against the guitar-strumming Estonian loon. “There is perhaps a time,” the Welsh voters mused to themselves as they entered the polling booth, “when we would be reasonably happy to be represented by someone who monkeys around with crap Romanian pop stars and tries to sting us for his court fine

Chew on this, girls: extreme diets are a delusion

I’m in favour of diets because I’m not in favour of chronically obese people waddling around pretending they’re thrilled with the way their thighs rub together.

Voters must never be let down like this again

Casting a vote is one of the most important things we do in a democracy. The Electoral Commission campaigned in the run-up to the election with the slogan “Make sure nothing stops you voting”. Hundreds of thousands of people — many young, first-time voters — registered to vote as a result

In the drab echoing halls where votes are counted, a hundred tiny moments cut through the muddle and tedium of the longest night and make you smile for democracy.

We broke the Perspex for pick’n’mix politics

As I cleared the teacups and blankets from my living room and brushed away the metallic unslept taste from my mouth, I was unexpectedly cheerful. Partly because I wasn’t watching, as dreaded, an endless TV loop of crowing George Osborne-a-likes clinking glasses of Veuve Clicquot on balconies, partying like it was 1979.
