High-dollar contract authorized for Racquet Club renovation

The Park City Council Thursday night, still perplexed with the overall municipal budget, authorized an $8.3 million deal to renovate the Racquet Club, unanimously agreeing to what will be one of the largest ever overhauls of a City Hall-owned building.

Dear Abby: Combat medic’s hard choice wins praise and veneration

Dear Abby: I had to write regarding “Doc in Distress” (March 26), who allowed a critically wounded comrade to push him away so he could save others. I spent eight years as a combat medic in the Army.

On the endangered list: free-range children

The opening words of Kipling’s public school novel Stalky & Co echo sadly today. “In summer,” he begins, “all right-minded boys built huts in the furze-hill behind the College — little lairs whittled out of the heart of the prickly bushes, full of stumps, odd root-ends and spikes, but, since they were strictly forbidden, palaces of delight.” Eheu fugaces, as their Beaks would say

Dennis Hopper: the rebel without a cause

He was the cowboy outlaw who blew smoke in the faces of the studio stuffed-shirts with his counter-cultural crossover hit, Easy Rider. He was the 18-year-old actor who idolised his co-star, James Dean, and counted him as his mentor

Apple Cider Vinegar Tea and Cumin Soy Biscuits

The unstable rise and drop(80F a day and 50F the next!) in spring temperatures can leave some of us miserably sick.Your truly was brought down by a bad episode of aching itchy soar throat followed by exasperating cough, not to mention the fatigue.Thankfully the relief came without visiting the doctor, through some simple home remedies. But beware if the throat ache or persistent cough does not subside in 3-4 days of home treatment or accompanies fever,be sure to get doctor’s advice first.Normally the doctor would give antibiotic for bacterial infection but not for the viral, either of the cases, the home remedies can be put to test. There are many to try,but these two in particular are safe and work effectively for me. 1 .Herbal teas (like the Ginger honey , Orange spice and Apple cider vinegar, recipe below),a cup every 3-4 hours.Slurping warm soups also is relieving

Voters bear responsibility in Treasurer’s Office woes

Only the voters of Beaufort County can remove treasurer Joy Logan or any other elected county official from office. We voters were responsible for placing our trust in her by electing her, and we voters will be responsible for keeping or not keeping her in office. We voters have not delegated this responsibility to County Council or anyone else.

Old Testament Lesson 21 Study Notes: 1 Samuel 2-3; 8

One can reasonably argue that the book of Judges shows us the decline of Israel to a situation in which they have to have a king to lead them, and that the treatment of women that we see in Judges is a sign of that decline. One can also argue that Ruth is a response to that theme in Judges.

A Q&A with zombie movie master George Romero

For some audiences, it’s a pure nightmare transferred to the screen, an apocalyptic vision of a future where the dead come back to life and feed on the living. For others, the thrill of watching the undead against the living is sheer, bloody brilliance

J & A Master Bedroom, Day 4:: Painted Board & Batten (and a Case of Live & Learn)

Yesterday, I primed all of the board and batten walls in John & Alice’s bedroom, and then painted one full wall, and then parts of two other walls. The color I chose is Alabaster from Sherwin Williams.I really do love the color (although the blue on the upper wall still throws me a bit–it’ll eventually be painted a neutral color and then wallpapered.) But what I’m not sold on just yet is Sherwin

J & A Master Bedroom, Day 3:: Dresser Transformation

Actually, 95% of day 3 was spent finishing up the caulking, wood fillering (what do you mean that’s not a word!?), sanding, and prepping the walls for priming and painting. I probably could have gotten some of the priming finished, but when I was finally ready for it, I realized that…well…I had left the primer at home

Since instituting the “A Mormon Image” series last fall, our submissions have slowed from a glut to a trickle.  As a result, we thought we would issue a new call for photographs to be considered for inclusion in the series.
