UNB, Dhaka A top Chinese diplomat said here Wednesday Bangladesh and China would intensify cooperation between the militaries and law enforcement departments to safeguard respective national security and stability, and also promote peace in the region. Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Zhang Xianyi, who was speaking at a joint reception in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Dhaka and Beijing, said both the countries decided to forge ‘Closer Comprehensive Partnership of Cooperation’ from the strategic perspectives.

Staff Reporter Bangladesh Writers Guild (BWG), an organisation of writers, yesterday at a press conference urged the government and the people to stand against the misleading biographical publication on national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Public Diplomacy Division, a division of Indian Foreign Ministry, had recently published biography of Kazi Nazrul Islam entitled Nazrul: the Poet Remembered where some misleading photographs were presented. On page 134 of the book a mat was presented that Nazrul, as the caption below describes, used it both times for praying Namaz and worshiping statue.

Staff Reporter The much-debated issue of vacating the cantonment residence of BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is likely to be resolved on October 13, as the High Court has set the date to deliver its verdict regarding it.The government last year served a notice to former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia asking to vacate her cantonment residence, which was leased to her after assassination of her husband and former president Ziaur Rahman. Subsequently, Khaleda Zia filed a Writ petition with the High Court challenging the government notice.

Staff Reporter Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed yesterday urged the judges and prison officials to double-check age of any convict to make sure that children do not end up in jail despite police claim on the contrary. Speaking at the inaugural day of a two-day international conference titled ‘Locked up and forgotten’ at Police Staff College in the city’s Mirpur area, he called for reforming the judiciary and asked officials concerned to ensure that no innocent person is confined in jail by mistake.

Staff Reporter At least seven workers burnt alive and many others sustained injuries in a devastating fire that broke out at a shoe factory at Dholaipar in South Jatrabari in the capital yesterday. The fire gutted Lily Chemical, an adhesives making factory where adhesives and shoe soles were stuck together around 4:50 pm leaving seven persons dead on the spot. The deceased were identified as Amir Hossain, Kohinur, Shainur, Fahima, Aklima, Rimu and Alaya.

Do you remember this bedside table I bought at Goodwill for Bailey’s room? Yesterday, it underwent a bit of a transformation. I started out by using my electric sander on all of the flat surfaces just to remove any rough areas and to give it some “tooth”. I finished up the sanding by hand since there were so many grooves and details that couldn’t be reached with the electric sander.
