Camera Ready

Happy Monday! I hope you had a fantastic weekend!Mine was busy, and hectic, and fun. From Wednesday to Saturday of last week, I worked my little fingers to the bone finishing up little projects around my condo, and then the photographer, Ben Sklar, came at 5:30 on Sunday evening to take some pictures for the New York Times article. It was really fun, and I was so proud to show off my

Does It Look Like A Headboard Yet?

Well, it doesn’t look like a pretty one just yet.I promise you that the heat hasn’t affected my mind! Well, maybe just a little. After all, yesterday was my fourth day of working outside in the heat all day long, and the temp was 99 degrees! It has, however, affected the speed at which I work. On a cooler day, I could have finished this sucker in one day.

J & A Master Bedroom:: Dresser Transformation (A Sneak Peek)

Happy Monday to you! I was hoping to show you the finished dresser transformation for John & Alice’s master bedroom, but I wasn’t quite able to finish it. So, you’ll just have to come back tomorrow to see the final result.For now, I’ll show you a bit of a sneak peek.First, do you remember the original dresser? It looked like this:It was nice–solid wood–but I wanted to make some changes to

Gwen’s Bedroom:: Finishing Touches (and Two Items Transformed)

As I mentioned yesterday, I’m still working on the finishing touches on Gwen’s bedroom. (If you missed the reveal of her finished bathroom, you can click here to view the full before and after.)Anyway, as I’m finishing up the details, I wanted to share a couple of them with you.First, her nightstand underwent a little transformation. It matched the dresser and chest of drawers, but I didn’t

Gwen’s Bathroom:: Some Finishing Details

I was able to spend Saturday working on Gwen’s bathroom, so I wanted to show you a few of the details that have been added.First, the shower. Because this is a budget makeover, the challenge was to find a budget-friendly way to reduce the harshness of the gold on the shower door.My solution was to add a custom shower curtain

A Trip Back In Time (and My Gorgeous New Blooms)

I’m here a little late today…but I made it! I had some things to do this morning, including a trip to the upholsterer to check on some chairs for a client.I don’t think I’ve mentioned this client to you yet, mainly because her project has been delayed…and delayed…and delayed some more due to various circumstances.Her name is Julia, and the project is a kitchen remodel along with some

A Heart To Heart Talk About "Talent"

Over the last few weeks, I’ve spent many, many hours by myself in other people’s homes working all day. And let me tell you, when I spend that much time alone, I get absolutely lost in my thoughts. I think about all kinds of topics: my relationship with God, politics, my present and future projects, etc

J & A Master Bedroom (and the Easy Way To Scrape Heavy Texture From A Ceiling)

Happy Monday to you all! Today’s post won’t be terribly thrilling, or filled with beautiful pictures, but I hope that it will be useful for many.I often hear people talking about scraping the heavy texture (sometimes called “popcorn” ceiling or acoustic texture) from their ceiling using sprayers filled with water.

J & A Master Bedroom, Day 4:: Painted Board & Batten (and a Case of Live & Learn)

Yesterday, I primed all of the board and batten walls in John & Alice’s bedroom, and then painted one full wall, and then parts of two other walls.The color I chose is Alabaster from Sherwin Williams.I really do love the color (although the blue on the upper wall still throws me a bit–it’ll eventually be painted a neutral color and then wallpapered.) But what I’m not sold on just yet is Sherwin

J & A Master Bedroom, Day 3:: Dresser Transformation

Actually, 95% of day 3 was spent finishing up the caulking, wood fillering (what do you mean that’s not a word!?), sanding, and prepping the walls for priming and painting. I probably could have gotten some of the priming finished, but when I was finally ready for it, I realized that…well…I had left the primer at home

J & A Master Bedroom, Day 2:: More Board & Batten (and My Love For Caulk)

Yesterday was my second work day on John & Alice’s master bedroom. I finished installing all of the molding, and got about 1/3 of the caulking done.I just have to ask…what in the world did people do before caulk was invented?

My Kitchen Wall:: The Plan…Probably

Do you remember my kitchen wall, and my pouty little temper tantrum I threw because my plan for that wall wouldn’t work?I know…it was a pathetic display.However, probably more pathetic is the fact that right now, one month later, my kitchen wall still looks exactly like this…Empty frame and all…I kid you not.It’s time for action.Obviously step 1 needs to be filling that frame with a

J & A Master Bedroom, Day 1:: Progress on Board & Batten Walls

Saturday was my first official work day at John & Alice’s house. I got quite a bit done, although I had hoped to do more (the story of my life).I probably would have gotten much further if I hadn’t had so much trouble getting those darn baseboards up!! Removing existing baseboards isn’t required for installing board and batten

Board & Batten:: Simple, Fresh, and Beautiful

As I shared yesterday, I will be adding a beautiful board and batten wall treatment to the master bedroom in Alice & John’s house. Over the last couple of years, I’ve grown to absolutely love a board and batten treatment–so much so that I used it in the (still unfinished) living room and eating area in my own little condo.I chose to use a shorter board and batten that stops at a more traditional

Sharing My Design Secrets:: Custom Shower Curtains and Liners

A few days ago, I shared about my love for custom shower curtains that hang almost from the ceiling, have the fullness of a drapery panel, are made of gorgeous fabrics, and sometimes include trims that you would normally see on custom draperies.A few of you had questions about how to use a liner with these custom shower curtains.

Out of Curiousity:: How Much Is Too Much For Fabric?

Since I’m on a quest to find the striped fabric (or something pretty darn similar) that is on my $8 garage sale chairs, I’ve been scouring the websites of different fabric companies. My search has yet to reveal that particular striped fabric, but I have found some pretty amazing fabrics.
