Dhaka straining under pressure: Dist towns should be hub of regional growth

Pulack Ghatack Bangladesh is in serious need of decentralisation, experts said in policy papers and suggested the government to turn each district as the hub for a different sector. But problems have mounted in absence of comprehensive policy planning and mandatory implementation of development projects according to the guideline of such policy. “Dhaka is already straining at the pressure of being the absolute centre of commerce, education, diplomacy and politics.

Poura polls by May, UP by Oct: CEC

BSS, Naogaon Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda yesterday said the elections to the pourashavas and union parishads will be completed by May and October next respectively. Elections to these local government bodies will be held next year for smooth completion of the ongoing developments works of the government and requests by the Union Parishad Chairmen Samity, he said. He said this while visiting the possible sites for setting up upazila-level server stations in Mohadebpur, Rani Nagar, Sadar, Niyamatpur and Manda Upazilas and exchanging views with the officials and elite at Naogaon Circuit House.

BNP hints at accepting Bangabandhu trial verdict

Staff Reporter BNP Secretary General Khondoker Delwar Hossain yesterday expressed his hope that the nation would accept the final judgment of the Supreme Court in handing down the real accused in the Bangabandhu murder case. Addressing a discussion meeting at Ramna Park in the city, he, however, criticised Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and prosecution counsels saying that they are making final hints of the judgment in advance which he termed contrary to the independent judiciary.

Non-stop siege to Kishoreganj begins

UNB, Bhairab A nonstop Kishoreganj siege programme enforced by people in Bhairab and Kuliarchar upazilas began yesterday demanding that Bhairab and Kuliarchar upazilas be upgraded into a full-fledged district. Bhairab District Implementation Committee and All Party Action Council enforced the programme from 6am also in protest against burning down the effigy of the President. Hundreds of protesters took position on highways, waterways and railway stations in Bhairab in the morning

Gas diverted from power plants to fertiliser units: Govt contemplates rationing

Shamim Jahangir The government has decided to supply additional gas to fertilizer factories by reducing gas supply in the power plants to ensure urea fertilizer supply during coming Boro season. The decision came at a meeting presided over by State Minister for Power and Energy Brig Gen (retd) Enamul Huq at his secretariat office yesterday. Prime Minister’s Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Bir Bikram, Energy and Mineral Resources Division Secretary Mohammed Mohsin, Power Division Secretary Abul Kalam Azad, Petrobangla Chairman Prof Hossain Monsoor and Power Development Board (PDB) Chairman ASM Alamgir Kabir were present in the meeting.

Dhaka, Thimpu agree on land link

bdnews24.com, Dhaka Bangladesh and Bhutan have agreed to “explore the possibility of land connectivity” between the two countries under SAARC framework to enhance trade and people-to-people contact. The agreement came on Monday at the end of prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s four-day visit to the Himalayan nation. Hasina announced waiver of all taxes on import from Bhutan to increase the volume of trade, according to a joint press statement, released by foreign ministry, on the prime minister’s visit.

Babar taken on fresh remand

Court Correspondent Former State Minister Lutfozzaman Babar, Dhaka City’s Ward Commissioner Md Ariful Islam Arif and Huji leader Moulana Sheikh Abdus Salam were yesterday placed on remand afresh for different terms in the case filed in connection with bomb attack on a rally of Awami League on August 21, 2004. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Habibur Rahman Siddiqui granted a three-day remand for Babar, five-day remand of Arif and a four-day remand of Salam to quiz them in the grenade attack case.

BATEXPO attains less spot order, export falls by 26.83pc

ULFA leaders held in Dhaka produced in Assam court

Staff Reporter Police in India’s northeastern state of Assam produced two top leaders of the banned separatist outfit ULFA in a Guwahati court on Saturday. The Chief Judicial Magistrate in Guwahati sent them to 10 days police custody after they were produced in his court on November 7, according to a message received from India. According to United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA ) its ‘finance secretary’ Chitrabon Hazarika and ‘foreign secretary’ Shashadhar Choudhury had been picked up by “unidentified armed men” from a house in Dhaka, in the first week of this month.

Senior assistance group to move to Old Town Hall

A fledgling nonprofit that seeks to help Andover seniors remain in their homes will rent space in Old Town Hall on Main Street. Despite heated discussion that ultimately saw selectman supporter Mary Lyman leave the meeting (see related story Page 8), selectmen voted to rent 414 square feet of the town office space to The Andovers Village At Home group. Selectman Brian Major had argued the town should set up a new process to open the space up to all interested before offering it to anyone.

Mid-term review of budget implementation in Dec

BSS, Dhaka The Finance Ministry has prepared a list of activities to monitor the budget implementation process and ensure timely execution of the fiscal measurers. The ministry will also have a mid-term review on the implementation process of the fiscal measures in December this year and will publish a report on the progress in achieving budgetary targets. “We have chalked out a list of activities for achieving timely the targets of the Budget for the current financial year,” Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith told a discussion on budget implementation held in the city on Wednesday.

Delay in medical check-up: Thousands of Bangladeshi students fail to avail UK visa

Syful Islam Thousands of prospective student visa seekers to the United Kingdom for September session are struggling to cope with the set deadline as they are getting appointment for mandatory medical checkup in mid October. To obtain visa before the September session of the UK educational institutions, they have to submit application to the British High Commission within second week of September as it takes 2 to 3 weeks to process the document. The British High Commission in Dhaka and the UK Border Agency (UKBA) have appointed International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to look after the health checkup of possible migrants to the UK.

Prices of essentials yet to come down ahead of Ramzan

Talha Bin Habib As the holy month of Ramzan is just couple of days ahead, the prices of essential commodities are yet to come down to a tolerable level despite sufficient stock of commodities in the city’s kitchen markets. The market monitoring was supposed to start from Monday to contain the price spiral of essential commodities during the month of fasting. But there has been an abrupt price escalation of some essential commodities in the markets yesterday.
