Tk 1,32,200cr budget likely: Energy, agri, social welfare to get priority

Staff Reporter The national budget for the fiscal year 2010-11 may stand at around Tk 1,32,200 crore giving priority to energy, agriculture, education and social welfare, and measures to curb price hike, official sources said. Finance Minister AMA Muhit is now giving a last minute check on budget documents before sending those to the government security printing press.

Report within 7 days: Building collapse death toll 25

Staff Reporter The death toll rose to 25 yesterday from the building collapse at Begunbari in the capital as rescue workers pulled out two more bodies from the debris. Monir Hossain, assistant director of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, told The New Nation that the rescue workers recovered two bodies from the ruins in the morning raising the death toll to 25.

Global protest against Amar Desh closure: AL govt unable to tolerate criticism”

Special Correspondent Closure of opposition daily Amar Desh and arrest of its Editor Mahmudur Rahman have drawn global condemnation against the government of Sheikh hasina. Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Thursday condemned Bangladesh authorities for closing an opposition newspaper and said it was concerned about the paper’s detained editor.

Mahmud interrogated at central jail gate

Staff Reporter Tejgaon police interrogated detained Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of the daily Amar Desh, at Dhaka Central Jail gate yesterday in a case filed on charge of assaulting police and obstructing them in discharging their duties. Devastating fire engulfs old city

Staff reporter A devastating fire that broke out in old Dhaka’s Nawab Katra area yesterday night left at least ten people dead, fire brigade sources said. The fire originated at about 9 pm from a plastic factory and quickly engulfed the neighbouring residential buildings. The panic stricken inmates rushed for safety but many of them were trapped inside in dense smoke and darkness.

Syful Islam The Finance Division of the Ministry of Finance is scrutinising three proposals regarding recapitalisation and progressive 5 years transitional plan of Rupali Bank Ltd to recover it from the acute financial problem the state owned entity facing during the last couple of years, official sources said. Finance Division deputy secretary Nasir Uddin Ahmed yesterday wrote a letter to the director general of the division seeking his comment on the proposals submitted by the Rupali Bank Managing Director M Farid Uddin.

Staff Reporter The main opposition BNP yesterday said that its chairperson Khaleda Zia whitened her money but it was absolutely ‘white money’, not black. Describing the ‘white money’, the party said Khaleda Zia earned money from her immovable property of Tk 10 lakh and her Gulshan house which she got from the then President Abdus Sattar as pension and gratuity of her husband late President Ziaur Rahman after his assassination. 15 hurt in BCL factional clash at JN Varsity

UNB, Dhaka At least 15 Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) activists were injured in a factional clash at Jagnnath University Monday morning. Police and witnesses said the clash ensued at about 11am when the general students were staging demonstration demanding recovery of 12 dormitories from the occupation of outsiders. At one stage, some BCL activists led by Kamrul Hasan Ripon, president, university unit, attacked the general students.
