Ramzan begins today

UNB, Dhaka The country’s power generation has come down to about 3800 MW, which is the lowest in last 3-4 years. In such a situation, the holy Ramzan begins today (Thursday) with big apprehension of huge load shedding across the country that might have to be resorted to by the authorities concerned. According to official sources, the country’s highest generation was projected to be 3,877 MW against a demand of more than 5500 MW.

20 Bangladeshis arrested in UK

UNB, Dhaka The UK Border Agency detained 11 Bangladeshi illegal workers after three days of enforcement operations in South Devon in the UK. Steps are being taken to remove all the individuals from the UK, a release of the British HC here said Wednesday. The enforcement operations from August 3 – 5 were part of planned nationwide action by the UK Border Agency to tackle illegal working, sham marriages, bogus colleges and organized immigration crime

Shrimp export to EU hits snags

Syful Islam Shrimp export to European countries is facing massive hurdles as the European Commission is continuously imposing various restrictions citing health hazard, stakeholders say. As a result around two hundred Bangladeshi shrimp consignments are now become stranded in different ports of the world as the new EC rules prevent those to enter European States without carrying a certificate that those are free of oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline bacteria.

Jamaat leaders Qamaruzzaman, Quader Mollah arrested

Bangla-Nepal Commerce Secy-level talks today : Connectivity, transit top on agenda

Syful Islam Commerce secretaries of Bangladesh and Nepal will sit together today in the city to discuss various bilateral issues where connectivity and transit will get top priority, official sources said. The two days meeting may finalise the operating modalities for the carriage of transit, trade cargo between the two countries. In the meeting Bangladesh may extend ‘on arrival’ visa facilities to Nepalese citizens, sources said.

Production suffers, serious discomfort to public life : Power supply remains unpredictable

Talha Bin Habib The ongoing load shedding due to a gape between demand, generation and supply has been causing immense sufferings to the people as well as hampering industrial productivity. The situation has reached to a point that none can say when the power will come and how long it will stay as the power outage appears frequently, creating discomfort, especially when electricity cuts at midnight. The consumers in and outside the capital city are experiencing frequent power cuts during the day and night, and in some cases the load shedding lasted for 3 to 4 hours, say the consumers.

Mahmudur shown arrested in graft case

Court Correspondent Detained Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of the recently closed Bengali daily Amar Desh was again shown arrested in a graft case. The Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, filed against the former Adviser and Acting editor, Amar Desh, Mahmudur Rahman, sought orders to show him arrested in the case filed for non-submission of wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) while, Metropolitan Magistrate Kanika Biswas of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka gave the order of arrest in the case.

NBR press conference : Tk 923 cr legalised in ’09-10

Staff Reporter Tk 923 crore undisclosed money, publicly known as black money, was whitened this financial year 2009-10 which was slight more than that of previous years of democratic government. National Board of Revenue (NBR) disclosed the information at a press conference in its conference hall yesterday. NBR chairman Dr Nasir Uddin expressed his satisfaction over the so called black money collection this year thought the collection was not exceed than that of the time of caretaker government He said being afraid, people had whitened more money during caretaker government.
