Opposition boycott continues: JS discusses supplementary budget, lauds proposed new budget

Staff Reporter General discussions on supplementary budget 2008-2009 started at Jatiya Sangsad yesterday in the absence of the opposition lawmakers who are abstaining from the House demanding more seats in the front row. In the one-sided discussion, the treasury bench members expressed mixed reactions on the rationale and purposeful utilisation of allocated money and overall performances of the caretaker government. They were highly critical of the opposition’s boycott of parliament, which they said tantamounts to ignoring of people’s verdict and irresponsibility on their part.

Private TV to be barred from terrestrial telecast

Staff Reporter A new bill was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad yesterday to introduce legal bar on private television channels to use terrestrial telecast facility. Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad placed the bill titled Bangladesh Television Terrestrial Telecast Protection Facilities Bil-2009 with a view to protecting the terrestrial facilities right to the state-run Bangladesh Television only. The bill has been sent to the parliamentary standing committee on Information Ministry for scrutiny and further review

Tipaimukh not Farakka-like project: Sen

Staff Reporter India has assured Bangladesh that water would not be diverted by the Tipaimukh dam, which is not a barrage but a hydro-electric project, Minister for Water Resources Ramesh Chandra Sen informed the Jatiya Sangsad yesterday. Replying to a question of Prof Apu Ukil of Awami League the Minister also said that the Government would send a parliamentary team along with water experts to visit the site of the project soon and after submission of report by the committee, the Government would take necessary decision in this regard.

Bangabandhu murder trial delayed as case docket not yet prepared

Staff Reporter Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Barrister Shafique Ahmed yesterday informed the Jatiya Sangsad that the trial process in Bangabandhu Murder Case in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court is being delayed, as the docket of the case for appeal hearing was not prepared as yet. He said necessary initiative would be taken for appeal hearing of the case immediately after preparation of the docket. Barrister Shafique Ahmed informed this in the House replying to a star-marked question of Mahmud-us-Samad Chowdhury of Awami League during the question-answer hour.

Prices to rise, prices to fall

Staff Reporter Prices of luxurious goods including cars, vehicles, imported refrigerators, air conditioners, shoes, tiles, sanitary ware, particle board, biscuits, milk powder, suitcases, imitation jewellery, tooth brush and tobacco products will go up due to upward tariff structures proposed by Finance Minister ABM Muhith. Prices of most of the brands of mobile phone sets, particle board, hard board, medium density fibre (MDF) board, plywood, leather goods, such as bag, suitcase, vanity bag etc., mosquito coil, imitation jewellery and corrugated cartons, biscuits and dry cell batteries would also rise.

Vitamin A capsule aftermath: 2 children die, govt forms probe body

UNB, Dhaka Another child died reportedly from complications after taking Vitamin-A capsule and deworming tablet in Munshiganj on Sunday night as several hundred children fell sick across the country following a nationwide nourishment drive. Piar Hossain of Ballalbari area in Sadar upazila of Munshiganj district claimed his daughter Priya Akhter, 6, fell sick after having the Vitamin-A capsule and deworming tablet and died on Sunday night. According to media reports, 11-year-old Habib, son of Nizam Fakir, died in Doulatdia area under Goalanda upazila in Rajbari district after taking the capsule and tablet early Sunday.

RAJUK plots for AL MPs: Jote govt deprived them in the past

Pulack Ghatack The present government, which thinks the allotment of plots in Dhaka for MPs tantamounted to corruption by the erstwhile BNP-Jamaat government, will take fresh project to allot highly lucrative plots of lands at Gulshan, Banani, Purbachal and nearby areas for their MPs. State Minister for Housing and Works Adv Abdul Mannan Khan yesterday assured the lawmakers in the Jatiya Sangsad that Sheikh Hasina’s government would allot plot for them in a transparent way. He said that the Government had taken up a plan to build four satellite townships at the suburbs of the capital city Dhaka for resolving the housing problem.

Khaleda’s car not allowed in Cantonment, cops withdrawn

Staff Reporter BNP chairperson and leader of the opposition in Parliament Begum Khaleda Zia’s car, allocated by the government, was not allowed to drive into the cantonment towards her residence on Sunday night “The car allocated from the parliament to our party chairperson as leader of the opposition was not allowed in the cantonment on Sunday night to reach her residence,” Maruf Kamal Khan, press wing chief of BNP chairperson told journalists yesterday night at Khaleda’s Gulshan office in the capital.

CIB backlogs to be removed soon: Atiur

Staff Reporter Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman yesterday said that he would remove the backlog of information availability from the Credit Information Bureau (CIB) by the next two months. “Bangladesh Bank is working to remove the backlogs and the CIB report will be available in the quickest possible time,” he said inaugurating a workshop on “Budget Reporting”, organised by the Economic Reporters’ Forum (ERF) at the National Press Club. Disclosing the plan of providing credit information digitally Dr Atiur said concerned persons would get their credit information from the CIB at home through logging-in in the Internet after the removal of backlogs.

Ministers visiting foreign countries must report to cabinet

BSS, Dhaka In line with a provision introduced in 1972, ministers visiting foreign countries to participate in seminars and symposiums shall have to report back to the Cabinet on the outcome of the visit. The cabinet on Monday reintroduced the provision, that came to a halt in course of time, at the initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as it would help undertake and implement various development projects in an easier and updated way for reaching benefits to the people.

150 retired cadres to be reinstated

Rafiqul Islam Azad About 150 cadre officials who were given forced retirement during the previous four-party alliance government are going to be reinstated. Besides, 6000 non-cadre officials and employees who lost their jobs during the same period will get their due compensation and remunerations, according to highly placed sources in the Prime Minister’s Office. The sources said the Review Committee formed earlier has already submitted its report to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after scrutiny of relevant documents.

CPD opposes legalising of undisclosed money: 5.88 pc lowest GDP in five years apprehended

Staff Reporter Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), an economy research body, has suggested to energise investment, consolidate agriculture, protect external sector, strengthen public finance and revive development administration for the sustainable economy of the country. CPD remarked yesterday at a press briefing on the economy for 2008-2009 fiscal year at its Dhanmondi office in the city. Eminent economist Debapriya Bhattacharya briefed journalists, while Prof Mustafizur Rahman presented the keynote paper.

3 more cohorts of Dawood held

Mamunur Rashid Detective Branch (DB) police yesterday picked up three more persons, alleged to be cohorts of mafia don Dawood Ibrahim, for interrogation. DB police gathered the names of these three persons enjoying patronage of some political leaders from Indian citizen Zahid Sheikh alias Muzahid who was arrested from a house in the capital a few days ago.After collecting their names from Muzahid DB police conducted raid at different parts of the capital and picked them for quizzing. Their antecedents were not disclosed.

Power generation from Sylhet plant uncertain

Shamim Jahangir Electricity generation from 90MW Sylhet Combine Cycle Power Plant (phase 2) at Fenchuganj has become uncertain due to conflict between state-run Power Development Board (PDB) and the Chinese construction company over exemption of tax and vat on equipment imported for the plant. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) imposed four per cent advance income tax (AIT) and four and a half per cent of VAT on the invoice of the construction company M/s Harbin Power Engineering Co Ltd (HPE).

AL urges BNP to join JS session: Parliament to be focal point of all activities

BSS, Dhaka Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC) at a meeting here on Saturday urged opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to join the parliament, saying they would make the House a platform doe all activities with participation of all political parties. The meeting chaired by Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held at the party’s Dhanmondi office expressed the hope that BNP would join the parliament very soon to perform their duties as mandated by the people.

Voters say plan new school, fire house, fields, town yard

Several new construction projects appear on the horizon for Andover, after voters spent more than 10 hours approving money for a variety plans during 2009 Town Meeting on May 26, 27 and 28. Voters approved the planning of a new fire station in the Ballardvale section of town; a replacement for Bancroft Elementary School, combining the project with alleviating overcrowding at Shawsheen Primary School; playing fields to be built on town-owned land on Blanchard Street; and a new town yard, looking to move the vehicle maintenance and refueling facility out of downtown Andover.
