Biman fails to procure aircraft for Hajj pilgrims

UNB, Dhaka The government move to ensure smoother operation of Hajj flights this year appears to face a setback as Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited has failed to add any leased aircraft to its fleet for that particular period. On March this year, Biman floated a Request for Proposal (RFP) to add a Boeing 747 aircraft to its fleet under Aircraft Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (ACMI) wet lease system to strengthen its services during the Hajj period. But the move appears fruitless as the national flag carrier got a very poor response from Airlines/Operators/Owners of Aircraft/Leasing Companies.

Action plan for speedy implementation of Tipaimukh project

Staff Reporter In spite of there being strong opposition from various sections inside and outside India against the proposed Tipaimukh Dam Project, the Manipur state government of India has formulated special proposed vehicle (SPV) for speedy implementation of the project, said Imphal Free Press. Ignoring strong opposition from Bangladesh and Indian Manipur state people, a state high powered meeting has recently chalked out the action plan for the speedy implementations of 1500 MW Tipaimukh project in the state following the environment clearance by the Ministry of Forest and Environment as recommended by the State Forest Department through Regional Chief Conservator of Forest, RCCF, Shillong.

HC judgement on independence proclamation case today

UNB, Dhaka The High Court is likely to deliver judgment today (Sunday) on a writ petition that challenged the validity of the past BNP-led alliance regime’s action introducing Maj Ziaur Rahman over three decades as the proclaimer of Bangladesh’s independence. Advocate Manzill Murshid, counsel for the writ petitioner, told UNB about the possible verdict after browsing Sunday’s HC cause list. A chapter was interpolated into the History of Bangladesh War of Liberation through its June 2004 edition on a new thought that Maj Ziaur Rahman made the declaration of independence on March 26, 1971.

Swine flu case detected in Bangladesh

Staff Reporter Bangladesh yesterday announced detection of first case of deadly swine flu in a body of a non-resident Bangladeshi who just returned from United States of America (USA), according to a Health Ministry press statement. Examining the throat swab and nasal wash samples of the person, whose identity was not disclosed, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control & Research and Influenza Centre (IEDCR) and the International Centre for Diarrheal Diseases and Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) jointly confirmed the presence of H1N1 virus responsible for the deadly flu, the statement elaborates.

Govt warned against diversion of public fund in name of PPP

Staff Reporter Veteran Awami League lawmaker Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir yesterday cautioned the government against amassing public fund by the private entrepreneurs while implementing projects under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mechanism proposed in the national budget. Participating in general discussion on the 2009-2010 national budget he said the government must take care about the public and private investment so the money is not wasted as it is seen that “in the name of equal capital, money was looted indiscriminately during the previous alliance government and the caretaker government”.

Muhith urges opposition to join JS

Staff Reporter Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday urged the opposition parties to return to the Parliament and join in the budget discussion. “We will consider your constructive opinions… Parliament will become more lively in presence of members of opposition parties,” he told newsmen after a meeting with the delegation of Bangladesh Auto Biscuit and Bread Manufacturers Association at the Secretariat. He, however said, the activity of Parliament is continuing even though the main opposition has been absent in the budget session.

20 plants to generate 3,551mw power to be set up by 2014

BSS, Dhaka The government has decided to set up 20 new plants with a generation capacity of 3,551 megawatt electricity by 2014 to meet the growing demand in the country. As per the decision, 20 power plants would be built under short-term and long-term plans in both public and private sectors. Power Development Board (PDB) sources said under the short- term plan, two small IPP power plants, four three-year-long hire basis plants, one 15-year-long hire basis plant and two plants in public sector would be built

Govt to export coal ignoring opinion of NRB experts

Shamim Jahangir back from Tangail Non-Resident Bangladeshi (NRB) experts on coal mining yesterday urged the government not to export coal without special circumstances. But the Petrobangla has already placed a proposal to the Energy Ministry to export two lakh tonnes of coal. The recommendations of the experts came from a post-workshop press conference on ‘Brainstorming with Non-Resident Bangladeshi Experts on Coal-Mining in Bangladesh’ held at Jamuna resort in Tangail.

Bangladesh gas cheapest in Asia

Rafiqul Islam Azad The cost related to per cubic meter- general use of gas in Bangladesh is exclusively lowest compared to 15 countries in Asia, according to a survey conducted by Japan External Trade Organisation Organization (JETRO), the official trade and investment promotion agency of Government of Japan. The survey revealed the cost of six components, including mobile phone charge (monthly & per minute call), water rate-general & business use (monthly) & gas rate-general & business use (monthly) in Bangladesh is also lowest along with some other countries.

INCIDENT OF THE WEEK Thursday, June 11 – At 7:51 p.m., police received a 911 call reporting the caller’s wife was behind a Lawrence police car on Harding Street, and it "appeared to be operated by a 13- to 15-year-old male." An Andover sergeant spoke with the operator of the car, who is a Lawrence police officer, and found no problem. Fight for supremacy in port: Ctg MP flown to S’pore for treatment

Hasanuzzaman Khan Awami League MP and president of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry M A Latif was flown to Singapore on Sunday for treatment after he sustained injuries following a scuffle reportedly with the on-duty Policemen and the Mayor-backed Awami League workers in front of WTCC office in Chittagong. The Chittagong MP was reported to have developed fractures in his shoulders following the two-pronged assault in a bizarre manner

Submission of constitutions: EC to issue show-cause notice to political parties

UNB, Dhaka The Election Commission has decided to issue show-cause notices to the registered political parties if they fail to submit their permanent constitutions by the July 25 deadline. “We want the political parties to submit their permanent constitutions to the Commission in compliance with the July 25 deadline,” Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda told reporters replying to a question at the Commission Secretariat. Dr Huda, however, said the Commission would consider time if any political party submits application seeking time for submitting its permanent constitution.

Gen Matin summoned to testify before JS body

Staff Reporter A parliamentary probe body yesterday decided to summon former shipping adviser of the caretaker government Maj Gen (Retd) MA Matin to explain his position about alleged irregularities against him in awarding contract of container handling at Chittagong Port to a private firm. The parliamentary standing committee on shipping ministry on May 27 formed the four-member sub-committee to investigate alleged corruption and irregularities against Matin, who was the head of the Anti Corruption Taskforce of the erstwhile military backed caretaker government.

17 more BDR jawans taken on remand

Court Correspondent Seventeen more Bangla-desh Rifles (BDR) Jawans were placed on remand, and two Jawans made confessional statements yesterday about their involvement in the mutiny at BDR Headquarters of Peelkhana on February 25-26, while eleven other border guards were sent back to jail on completion of their remand, as there was no more remand prayer about them. Of the seventeen jawans who were put on remand, ten were arrested yesterday and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) sought a ten-day remand for them, while the Metropolitan Magistrate Mominul Hassan granted remand for five days each.

No swine flu detected in Bangladesh

Staff Reporter Health Minister Dr AFM Ruhul Huq called upon the people not to be panicky about the swine flu since no case of it has been detected as yet in the country till yesterday. “Experts have already examined 41,348 incoming people at the Zia International Airport after swine flu broke out in different countries, but no person was found infected with it,” the minister told a press briefing after inter-ministerial meeting about preparations on swine flu at the Health Ministry Auditorium.

Padma Bridge: Increased loan assistance from Japan sought

UNB, Dhaka Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain Monday hoped that the government of Japan would increase its loan assistance for the proposed Padma Bridge. “Hopefully, the Japanese government will double its loan assistance as it earlier assured us of providing US $ 200 million in loan for the bridge,” he told reporters after a meeting with outgoing Japanese Ambassador Masayuki Inoue. The minister said Japan would also provide assistance for constructing metro rails and elevated expressways in Dhaka City as they were conducting feasibility studies in this regard.
