Bangladesh beat Windies, win ODI series

UNB, Dhaka After their magnificent first-ever overseas test-series victory in West Indies last week, Bangladesh again proved their worth clinching the maiden ODI series against a test nation abroad when the tigers chased down the galloping Caribbean hosts to beat them by 3 wickets at Windsor Park in Dominica Tuesday. They were doubly crowned through making a record of chasing their highest target in more than 200 ODI matches to reach the requisite 275 runs for the first time with six balls to spare and three wickets in hand.

Sedition charge: 2 lawyers asked to surrender to lower court

UNB, Dhaka The High Court Sunday asked advocates Subrata Chowdhury and Sheikh Awsafur Rahman Bulu, facing sedition charge over vandalism on the Supreme Court premises in November 2006, to surrender to the court of Metropolitan sessions judge within eight weeks. In passing the order, the HC took into consideration the submission of charge sheet against the two lawyers by the police and disposed of the ad interim anticipatory bail granted earlier to them in connection with the case. Advocate Subrata Chowdhury is a top leader of Gono Forum while Advocate Awsafur Rahman is a staunch supporter of the ruling Awami League.

JS team to visit Tipai site July 29

Staff Reporter Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources Ministry yesterday decided that an 11-member parliamentary team will go to Indian’s Tipaimukh Dam site on July 29 for a spot visit. The decision was taken at a meeting of the committee held at Sangsad Bhaban with its Chairman Abdur Razzak in the chair. The decision was taken apparently to keep in the mind that no lawmaker from the opposition BNP may join with the tour-inspection team headed by Abdur Razzak, meeting sources said.

DCC, Rajuk blamed for traffic jam

Staff Reporter Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) are not assisting the police to ease traffic jam in the city, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner AKM Shahidul Haque said yesterday. In a view-exchange meeting at the Rajarbagh telecom auditorium on Sunday, DMP Commissioner AKM Shahidul Haque said the DCC had leased many parts of the city streets. He also blamed DCC for installing big size dustbins on the city roads which is creating the nagging traffic congestion.

Hasina elected AL President, Ashraful GS: AL men warned against unjust attitude

Staff Reporter The 20th national council of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League yesterday unanimously reelected Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as president of the party for the sixth term and endorsed the selection of Syed Ashraful Islam as general secretary. Awami League (AL) senior presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury proposed the name of Sheikh Hasina for president and another presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim proposed the name of Syed Ashraful Islam for the post of general secretary. AL presidium member and Minister for Agriculture Matia Chowdhury seconded both the names.

Yet another rail disaster

bdnews24.com, Chittagong Bangladesh Railway has formed two separate committees to investigate the latest in a series of countrywide rail disasters, as a passenger train collided with an articulated lorry on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Feni on Thursday-exactly one week after a similar accident killed five people on their way to a wedding in Jessore. At least ten people were injured as three compartments of the Chittagong-bound Turna-Nishitha Express derailed after it hit the loaded lorry stuck at Fatehpur level crossing in the early morning.

3 RAB men, 1 ASI held for mugging: 7 lakh taka recovered

Staff Reporter Three RAB members including an assistant director of the elite force were arrested yesterday on charges of mugging an executive of an advertising firm and threatening him with death in ‘crossfire’. Syed Sajjad Selim, officer-in-charge of the Motijheel police station, told the New Nation that the police recovered Tk 7.5 lakh from the RAB assistant director Shoeb Ahmed and two army soldiers Shahidul Islam and Shagar Chandra. Shoeb holds the rank of assistant superintendent of police.

3 US mayors, 2 lawmakers among 44 held in graft case

Staff Reporter The mayors of three New Jersey cities, two state legislators and several rabbis were among 44 people arrested Thursday in a sweeping corruption investigation that began as a probe into an international money laundering ring that trafficked in goods as diverse as human organs and fake designer handbags, reports Associate Press. Among 44 people arrested Thursday were Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano III, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini, state Assemblyman L. Harvey Smith and state Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt.

France-Pakistan nuclear deal to focus on safety

Reuters, Islamabad A proposed partnership between France and Pakistan on civilian nuclear energy will be limited to nuclear safety and security, a senior French official said on Thursday. Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said in May that France had agreed to transfer civilian nuclear technology to Pakistan, giving it a deal similar to the one its rival India had obtained from the United States. Such a move would cause concern in the international community

Boxes and duct tape and Sharpies — oh my!

I have spent the past three days packing and labeling, wrapping our very fine Target (pronounced Tar-jay for this reference) place settings in some outdated newspapers, and noticing that the word fragile looks weird if you write it enough.  Fragile .  Fragile .  See?  For the next week and a half, we will be eating off of paper or plastic, and drinking out of those cups you get with kids’ meals at restaurants.  I will be wearing flip-flops and only flip-flops for the next week and a half,

DCs to seek restoration of magistracy power

Shamim Jahangir Deputy Commissioners in 64 districts have expressed their dissatisfaction over deterioration of country’s law and order situation recently and urged the government to exercise their magistracy power to restore law and order, informed sources of the Cabinet said. The deputy commissioners will raise their opinions to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the upcoming ‘Deputy Commission Conference-2009 will be held at PM Office and Cabinet Conference Room from July 28 to 30.

JS team to visit Tipai site next week

BSS, Dhaka A 10-member Bangladesh parliamentary delegation is set to visit India next week to assess the impact of cross-border Tipaimukh Dam as Dhaka again expressed its concern to New Delhi over the project on the Barak River along its northeastern borders. “The 10-member parliamentary team will now go to India on July 29,” State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hasan Mahmud told journalists adding that the delegation would meet the Indian foreign and energy ministers alongside visiting the project site in Manipur of India along Bangladesh’s northeastern frontier.
