Govt firm to protect rights of Adivasis

BSS, Dhaka Minister for Information and Cultural Affairs Abul Kalam Azad on Sunday said the present government is very much conscious about protecting the rights of tribal people. Addressing as the chief guest a discussion here on the occasion of the World Indigenous Peoples Day, he said the present government led by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is committed to ensure all facilities for the indigenous people. Tribal Welfare Association organised the function with the chairman of the association and State Minister for Cultural Affairs Advocate Promod Mankin presiding.

Expatriate Welfare Bank soon: JS body for reducing harassment of workers abroad

Staff Reporter The government will launch long awaited Expatriate Welfare Bank by this year to reduce harassment and hassle of the expatiates in sending remittance from abroad and carrying out welfare-oriented activities for them. This was disclosed at a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment at Sangsad Bhaban with its Chairman Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud in the chair. The committee recommended introduction of the Expatriate Welfare Bank as a complete bank and setting up its branches across the country.

Repatriation of Rohingyas: Rehabilitation programme by Int’l organisations urged

Army pullout from CHT challenged: Petition filed with HC bench

UNB, Dhaka A petition was filed with the High Court on Sunday seeking injunction against the army pullout from the Chittagong Hill Tracts under a recent government decision taken for implementing the CHT peace treaty. The plea came in a supplementary application over the pending writ petition challenging the validity of the 1997 CHT peace treaty. Receiving the application, a division bench comprising Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury fixed August 16 for hearing and asked the government side to come armed with necessary preparation to face the challengers.

Bangabandhu murder case: Appeal hearing begins before Aug 15: Shafiq

UNB, Dhaka The long-pending appeal hearing on Bangabandhu murder case will begin before August 15, Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed said Sunday as the groundwork is already done, including the appointment of adequate number of judges to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. “We hope that the hearing of the case will begin before August 15 as the cause list will be available by then,” he told reporters at his secretariat office.

RU proctor, house tutors, confined over seat row

RU Correspondent Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) activists of Rajshahi University (RU) on Thursday confined RU proctor, assistant proctors, house tutors and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists for four hours at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman hall over allotment of hall seats. Following the incident, RU authorities along with police conducted raid at Shibir- controlled different rooms of the hall and arrested two Shibir cadres along with a outsider from the hall as they took position inside the hall with iron rods.

Market monitoring from Monday: Wholesalers, retailers to hang price lists

Talha Bin Habib The government is going to start market monitoring from Monday with a view to containing price spiral of essential commodities and curbing price escalation by the unscrupulous traders. The Ministry of Commerce and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) will set up separate monitoring cells to monitor the prices and to put a leash on profit mongering traders from hoarding essential commodities.

Democratic Parliament or government cannot be like emergency-time half-civilian, half-military

Staff Reporter Former adviser of the caretaker government Barrister Mainul Hosein on Tuesday expressed the hope that the Speaker of Parliament would intervene as Nasrul Hamid, MP made aggressive, defamatory and untrue statements against him violating rules guiding Parliamentary committees. The convenor of the Parliamentary sub-committee made very objectionable and libellous remarks not only against him but also against his wife and son, Barrister Mainul said in a private TV channel ATN Bangla “Hello Bangladesh” programme. Nobody expected such behavour from a Member of Parliament, he said.

Orphanage fund embezzlement: Khaleda, Tarique chargesheeted

UNB, Dhaka The Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday submitted charge-sheet against former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, her elder son Tarique Rahman and four others in the Zia Orphanage Trust fund embezzlement case, one of so many graft cases filed against politicians during the military-backed interim regime. The others charge-sheeted in the case are former BNP lawmaker Kazi Salimul Haque, Sharfuddin Ahmed, ex-principal secretary Kamal Ahmed Siddiqui and Mominur Rahman, son of Khaleda’s sister.

UK envoy says: Diplomats had no hand in calling out troops from barrack

Staff Reporter Former British envoy Anwar Choudhury has denied the allegation of his involvement in the 1/11 changeover of power in Bangladesh in 2007. “I categorically deny any involvement in the 1/11 shift in the political scenario,” said Choudhury and emphasized that any change that happened on that date was a “result of the internal dynamics of Bangladesh.” The Bangladesh-born British diplomat arrived in Dhaka on Monday on an official visit as director in charge of International Organisations of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Implementation of mega-plan for power sector: Govt to seek donors’ support: Muhith

UNB, Dhaka Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday said that the government would seek support from the development partners for implementing a mega-plan for power and energy sector, as he observed the pace of country’s development is decelerating due to electricity crisis. “We’ll place our mega-plan before the Development Forum Meeting (DFM) to be held in January next,” he told reporters after two consecutive meetings-one with the European Bangladesh Federation and another with jute mill owners-at his ministry.

Larma demands roadmap to full troops pullout

Call to ensure street children’s education right

Staff Reporter INCIDIN Bangladesh, a research based social development organisation, yesterday called for ensuring street children’s right to primary education in the National Educational Policy. Addressing a press conference at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU), AKM Mustaque Ali, one of the Executive Directors of INCIDIN Bangladesh, urged the government to create provision of unconditional enrollment procedures in the primary school for the street children. He said there should be special arrangement in the education system for the street children so that they could get enrolled in the higher classes only attending in the final examination.

Forced retirement of judges: Govt retracts orders: BJSA regrets Secretariat demonstration

UNB, Dhaka The government on Sunday decided to retract its punitive orders sending on forced retirement two judges who had led an angry demonstration inside the restricted premises of Bangladesh Secretariat. Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed told reporters at his Secretariat office in the afternoon that the President, who passed the early-retirement orders on Thursday in exercise of his powers under the constitution, “may revoke the orders as per the constitution”. The axed judges are M Abdul Gafur, a judge of district and sessions court in Dhaka, and M Shahjahan, a judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Gazipur.

Lack of work order, disruption in gas and power supply: 100 RMG factories closed in recent months

Syful Islam A total of 99 readymade garment factories have been closed during the last couple of months in absence of sufficient work order, disruption in gas and power supply, and labour unrest, stakeholders said. Some factories are also in the queue to face the same fate, they added. The 12 per cent hike of gas price will only hasten the process of closure of the factories, which are now suffering following global economic meltdown, BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy told The New Nation yesterday.

JS body to investigate army-students clash at DU: Intelligence officials concerned may be summoned to testify

UNB, Dhaka A Parliamentary Panel on Sunday decided to reinvestigate the August 20, 2007 ‘heinous’ incident between army personnel and students of Dhaka University during the military-backed interim government that led to the arrest and conviction of some teachers also. A meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education Ministry with its chairman Rashed Khan Menon in the chair took the decision and asked the Home Ministry to make overall information and data of its different intelligence agencies about the army-DU student confrontation to the committee.

CAB demands proper drug administration law

Staff Repoter Speakers at a press conference, organised by Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) at its office yesterday said that lack of proper monitoring system of pharmaceutical companies puts human life in danger. Referring to the death of 17 children after taking Paracetamol syrup of Rid Pharmaceutical Company recently, they questioned how the company could mix dye ethailine glycol that damages kidney. Dr ABM Farooque, Prof of Pharmaceutical Department of Dhaka University said corruption and callousness of all concerned including drug companies and drug inspection department are responsible for this incident.
