To push, you must know where the door is

The other night I met Florence who, although suspended from school, made homeless at 15 and then sensitively rehoused in a hostel for junkies, has just completed the first part of a psychology degree at Oxford University. “With a 2.1!” she says, pumping a fist. Tall and black, stroppy and beautiful, she is no one’s positive action show pony.

Sun City residents’ obligations spelled out

For all the Sun City Hilton Head residents concerned about golf course assessments, please take a minute to read Article 1.11 of the covenants, conditions and restrictions for the definition of our common areas, and see for yourself that it specifically includes the golf courses. Then read Article 5.1 for the association’s responsibility to maintain those common areas and see that all maintenance, repair and replacement costs are to be allocated among all lots. The golf courses have not been excluded.

Donations Needed – single mom in need

i was 24 yrs old when my first husband & i separated.  i made 11 bucks an hour working at The Gap, and had a 3 year old at home.  times were pretty tough. i lived on sandwiches & cereal for more than a year, because that’s what i needed to do to pay the rent, pay the babysitter, pay for my kids clothing.  i was a single mom for 8 years, and it was the most challenging time in my life.  you need to get pretty creative when you are pinching pennies that hard. there is no way i would have b

Imaginary guitar is the airway to heaven

I spent last weekend at the Latitude Festival in Suffolk. The experience completely restored my faith in festivals. I went to V a few years back and decided there that my festival-going days were behind me. It wasn’t really a festival at all — just an enormous gig. A festival, to me, is not just about which big-name acts are playing. I need some peace and love — a sense that people have left their anxieties and aggression at the gate and bought into a three-day idyll.

Blunt warning about greens under the bed

Britain is, thankfully, an ideologically barren land. The split between Right and Left is no longer ideological, but tribal. Are you a nice social liberal who believes in markets, or a nasty social liberal who believes in markets? Anthony Blunt’s memoirs, published this week, reveal a different age, one in which fascism and communism were locked in a seemingly definitive battle for souls.

The troops leave. And then the horrors begin

Almost exactly 30 years ago, in the summer of 1979, an IRA double ambush killed 18 British soldiers near the town of Warrenpoint in Northern Ireland. Among them was the commanding officer of the Queens Own Highlanders, Lieutenant-Colonel David Blair. It was the worst single incident during a campaign that lasted nearly two decades and cost more than 700 military lives.

Boxes and duct tape and Sharpies — oh my!

I have spent the past three days packing and labeling, wrapping our very fine Target (pronounced Tar-jay for this reference) place settings in some outdated newspapers, and noticing that the word fragile looks weird if you write it enough.  Fragile .  Fragile .  See?  For the next week and a half, we will be eating off of paper or plastic, and drinking out of those cups you get with kids’ meals at restaurants.  I will be wearing flip-flops and only flip-flops for the next week and a half,
