Captain Black casts light on a dark place

Disappointment has rippled through the ranks of Obama supporters in recent weeks, with the reviving of Guantánamo military courts and other backtracking in the War on Terror. More worrying still, in Afghanistan, Bagram Air Force Base has become Guantánamo’s evil twin sister — and a bloated twin at that, with a new $50 million prison bringing the number of inmates to more than 1,500, none of whom has ever caught sight of a lawyer or a legal right.

The poor little mutt. But was it rude to stare?

Just when you thought that every imaginable etiquette question had been posed and answered, suddenly, from nowhere, just when you’re on holiday in the South of France and at least 1,000 miles from the nearest Debrett’s or glossy-mag advice page, a real rip-snorter leaps up and leaves you foundering, to wit: is it rude to stare at a disabled dog?

Why I’m opposed to legalising assisted suicide

When I die, and if I have to arrange it myself, I will consult nobody, and do it unassisted if I can. I entertain not a flicker of moral or practical doubt on the subject, and never have. Speaking only for myself — in such matters one should never judge for others — if Nature does not do the job in a timely manner I shall consider it a duty to take matters into my own hands. For me it would be wretched, self-defeating, selfish, irrational, inefficient and pointlessly extravagant to live beyond the time when I am useful, or life is fun.

Getting Ready for a Party

Birthday Party Preparations This Sunday, Peter will be taking both kids to his parent’s house so that I can start cleaning for Sawyer’s birthday party.  My house is a mess and the yard is a mess.  I know I won’t be able to get everything done but I am hoping the ’surface’ will look clean I think this is the first year that Sawyer is old enough to understand what a birthday party is and he is getting excited about it.  Peter and I don’t think it is necessary for our kids to have a birthday

Is It Appropriate To Bring the Kids Along on Business Trips?

Associated Press President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, fourth from left, and their daughters Sasha and Malia are escorted toward Air Force One for a trip to Russia, Italy and Ghana. Many readers were surprised when President Obama took his wife, kids and mother-in-law along on his recent trip to Russia, Italy and Ghana , based on the e-mail I’m still receiving . Some thought it was too expensive, others too dangerous

Can the Porsche mythology survive under VW?

Incestuous couplings, blood feuds, betrayals, ambition, hubris, suicide by fire, collision of egos, power struggles, revenge, retribution, tragedy, defeat, reconciliation of opposites, symbols of sex and power. Is this Wagner’s Ring Cycle? No, it is Volkswagen’s epic Takeover of Porsche Cycle.

Headline-chasing is harming Tory credibility

David Cameron said yesterday that the next general election is absolutely not in the bag for the Tories. “The public are going to take a lot of convincing” about Tory policies, he added, particularly about their ability to be “safe and sensible on the big economic decisions” that must be taken in the coming years. As a result, Mr Cameron concluded in his radio interview: “We are really focused on what we need to do between now and the next election.” How true — and how sad.

Bangladesh beat Windies, win ODI series

UNB, Dhaka After their magnificent first-ever overseas test-series victory in West Indies last week, Bangladesh again proved their worth clinching the maiden ODI series against a test nation abroad when the tigers chased down the galloping Caribbean hosts to beat them by 3 wickets at Windsor Park in Dominica Tuesday. They were doubly crowned through making a record of chasing their highest target in more than 200 ODI matches to reach the requisite 275 runs for the first time with six balls to spare and three wickets in hand.

Big-bank bashing is pure political hypocrisy

Alistair Darling made it clear this week that the Government had not rescued the banking sector “out of some charitable act”, so the banks had a duty to get lending. At the meeting with the chief executives of seven of Britain’s biggest banks he effectively threatened them with a competition inquiry if they failed to increase cheap lending to mortgage borrowers and small businesses.
