Permanent trade fair centre in city soon

BSS, Dhaka All is set to construct a permanent complex for holding international trade and other fairs in capital Dhaka as an agreement has already been signed with China to build the much awaited infrastructure at a cost of Taka 265 crore. Commerce Minister Col (retd) Faruq Khan on Monday said the permanent venue for international trade fair would be built near the National Parade Square, opposite to Bangabandhu International Conference Center, to hold all big events without any hassle.

Myanmar agrees to take back ‘verified Rohingyas’

BSS, Dhaka Myanmar on Tuesday agreed to immediately take back some 9,000 Rohingya refugees out of over 28,000 registered ones as their identities were confirmed through their verification process, Foreign Secretary Mohamed Mijarul Quayes said here on Tuesday. “This (refugee) issue was a top priority in our bilateral consultation and they will soon start the repatriation process to take back their nationals whose identities were already verified,” he told a press briefing after talks with Myanmar Deputy Foreign Minister Maung Myint, who holds the status of the foreign secretary of his country.

Sahara asks law enforcers to work impartially

Staff Reporter Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun yesterday asked the law enforcers to work impartially without being influenced by anyone using the party connection. She also urged the law enforcers not to give shelter to anyone trying to influence them in any matter as “you are paid from the people’s taxes.” “The previous governments had reduced the police force into a force o their party. But, we didn’t do it,” the Home Minister said while addressing a views exchange meeting on community policing at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city.

Concern over plan for Indian security for its mission

Special Correspondent The report of Indian security forces being sent to Dhaka for providing security to their high commission, has created anxiety among cross sections of people. The Kolkata based daily, Anandabazar Patrika, was the first to report it from New Delhi on December 18 that India would send a 50-member security force for the protection of its High Commission in Dhaka.Those security persons have already been trained to provide security to VIP’s.

Repertory company deserves bed-tax grant

My husband and I recently saw the South Carolina Repertory Company production of “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks.” Before the play, Hank Haskell, treasurer, announced that the Hilton Head Island Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee had recommended no funding for the company. That announcement caused an audible gasp from the packed audience and caused us to write this letter to The Island Packet and to Hilton Head Island Mayor Tom Peeples asking you to do everything in your power to reverse this gross oversight.

Associated Press A scene from the film “A Christmas Carol.” I was recently reading this piece on the Huffington Post, in which the author, Alison Gilbert, discusses the difficulties during the holidays of parents who no longer have their own parents. “What happens,” she writes, “if the month of December serves not only to remind you of all things Merry — but of all the people you’ve lost?” I could relate to the circumstances of the post. You see, I’m a parent of a 7-year old son, but over the past two decades, I’ve lost both of my parents and my in-laws.

Chicago Blackhawks Hand Out Toys at Evanston Hospital

Troy Brouwer and Colin Fraser made their way to the Evanston Hospital Pediatrics Unit on Thursday, December 17 to hand out toys to children staying in the hospital. With the help of Blackhawks fans, more than 600 toys were donated to Blackhawks Charities. Fraser and Brouwer were joined by their wives Carli Fraser and Carmen Brouwer to help distribute the toys.
