Ooh, that David Miliband, he’ll scratch your eyes out

Our diplomatic war of words with Iran is brewing nicely. Last week the foreign secretary, David Miliband, condemned as “disturbing” the Ahmadinejad regime’s “lack of restraint” in its treatment of pro-democracy demonstrators. Tehran’s response was not long in coming: it retorted that “Britain will get slapped in the mouth if it does not stop its nonsense”.

Labour’s fixation with control is strangling everyone

There was something both sad and ironic about the prime minister’s attempt to sell Labour as the party of optimism in his new year message last week. Not just because he is the embodiment of dourness, and not just because there isn’t a lot to be optimistic about

We’re on a binge diet of sales – so it’s joy now, pain later

There are, it seems, limits to the ability of the average Briton not to spend. After a year of tightening our belts and holding back on consumption, it feels as if the country is simply going to the shops — a rush that would have defied belief a year ago when it was the gloomiest Christmas for retailers since, well, the previous recession.

Henderson Daily News > News > Girl has birthday gifts turned over …

“Maley didn’t need a lot of presents, and we knew the normal birthday gifts that you receive just get tossed aside,” her mother said. “She knew that these supplies for the animal shelter would be greatly appreciated.

Tim Hart: folk musician in the band Steeleye Span

Tim Hart played a rich and important part in the revival and popularisation of traditional English folk music. He enjoyed great success as a founder member of the band Steeleye Span, who, together with Fairport Convention, pioneered an innovative form of English folk-rock, performing traditional songs on electric instruments

Mercy can’t exist if distress has been abolished

This January I resolve to keep reminding myself that the Labour Party matters less with every passing week. The only and increasingly interesting political question is what the present Opposition will do with the working majority the voters will soon, surely, be handing it.

Profiling, not scanning, will stop potential plane bombers

Once again the vulnerability of air travel to terrorism has been exposed. The existing measures deployed for passenger security at airport security points didn’t stop the Christmas Day airline bomb plot suspect who had explosives sewn into his underwear

Our universities face a radical upheaval

It’s good, if you’re a university administrator, to keep a cool head when the word “hotbed” is being thrown at you. One admires that unnamed UCL official who dryly commented that if Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab had come to the UK intending to blow up planes, he would surely have done chemistry rather than mechanical engineering. The sad state of the failed bomber’s death-to-the-infidel underpants seems to bear that out.

No, my home won’t be a hotel for grown-up kids

I’m going to patent a device — worn around the neck like a cigarette girl’s tray — containing cloths for spill wipeage, a bin for nectarine peel, a rack for discarded tea mugs. It’s called the MummyMaid.

Please excuse this column. My brain has died

Even though it is still Christmas and we all know that nobody is reading newspapers, I’m still not going to just do my new year’s resolutions and call that a column.

Wrong Beginnings

“An only life”, said Philip Larkin, “can take so long to climb clear of its wrong beginnings, and may never.” Few have a worse beginning than the 50,000 children in care in Britain. All of them have suffered the disruption of losing their natural parents, many of them within traumatic memory. A difficult start in life often leads to poor behaviour and low attainment in education.

The Gathering Storm

Dozens of people were killed yesterday when a man drove a vehicle packed with explosives across a field and detonated them. The dead and wounded were entirely helpless players and spectators in a volleyball tournament in northwest Pakistan

The Most Popular Juggle Posts of the Year

As we wrap up this year, the Juggle would like to thank all of you for your readership, insight and always-engaging conversation. We also thought it would be interesting to take a look back at the most popular posts of the past year, in terms of views and comments. (“Most-viewed” and “most-commented” posts are often quite different.) The top most-viewed posts were mainly about big names ( Serena Williams , David Letterman, Bristol Palin ) or events in the news (the Baby Einstein refund ), as Juggle newbies discovered the blog through search engines.

Yitzhak Aharonovitch: captain of the the Holocaust survivor ship Exodus

As captain of the passenger ship Exodus, Yitzhak Aharonovitch played a crucial role in an event that came to symbolise the Jewish struggle for a homeland. In 1947 the Exodus left France for Palestine — then governed by British mandate — with 4,515 survivors of the Holocaust on board, but as it neared the port of Haifa, British naval forces surrounded it and opened fire, killing three people.
