Cold wave continues: Death toll rises to 33
Special Correspondent The prevailing mild cold wave over Rajshahi and Khulna Divisions and the regions of Tangail and Srimangal is likely to continue today (Tuesday) and the situation may improve a little by tomorrow. The number of deaths due to cold-related complications rose to 33 with three more deaths reported from Nilphamari yesterday

Inadequate gas supply to hamper power generation: Boro irrigation may suffer
Shamim Jahangir Power Development Board (PDB) in a letter to Petrobangla said that the electricity supply would be disrupted in the coming Boro and dry season due to short supply of gas to power plants. “The suffering of the people will intensify due to frequent load shedding as Petrobangla could not ensure required gas supply to the power plants,” PDB Secretary Md Azizul Islam told Petrobangla Chairman in a letter last week.

Dhaka, Delhi hopeful of Teesta deal
Staff Reporter India prefers carrying out dredging work in Bangladesh part of Ichamoti River to reach an agreement with Dhaka on sharing of waters of Teesta River. If India can complete the dredging work before the coming rainy season, it will be able to build embankments on its part of Teesta bank. India wants to ensure Bangladesh’s approval to carry out the dredging in Teesta River during the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s visit to Delhi from January 10

US curbs travel from 13 Muslim countries: Bangladesh not considered risky for extremism
Rafiqul Islam Azad The United States has introduced a set of new rules for passengers arriving from 13 Muslim countries and Cuba to ensure security to the US-bound flights. Those countries have been identified as risky for extremism. The US Transportation and Security Administration, which is responsible to ensure security of the important installments including the airports in the USA, issued the new rules that became effective from yesterday.

UK for fully functioning Parliament
UNB, Dhaka Visiting UK Minister for Communities and Local Government John Denham on Monday said Britain wants to see participatory democracy in Bangladesh with a fully functioning parliament. Talking to UNB, Denham who arrived here on a three-day official visit, said UK steadfastly wanted a return to democracy in this country and Britain helped in a smaller way in preparing the voter lists for free and fair elections
