The Pope is right about the threat to freedom

There are times when human rights become human wrongs. This happens when rights become more than a defence of human dignity, which is their proper sphere, and become instead a political ideology, relentlessly trampling down everything in their path. This is happening increasingly in Britain, and it is why the Pope’s protest against the Equality Bill, whether we agree with it or not, should be taken seriously

Failing out-of-hours care almost killed my baby

It started with a bruise the size of a shrivelled raisin that slowly grew into a magenta plum. It was Sunday evening, our baby was sleepy as we lifted him out of the bath and I noticed the mark under his tummy button. But he’d been running round London Zoo with his brothers and sister and I thought he must have knocked himself as he raced from the gorillas to the flamingos.

Remember Churchill when you think of Iraq

On May 13, 1940, shortly after lunch, Neville Chamberlain entered the House of Commons to be greeted by a massive ovation. Order papers were waved, MPs shouted, MPs cheered. And shortly afterwards the Prime Minister followed him.

Picture Frames – An Excellent Present For Valentine’s Day

When searching for that special, unique, memorable Valentine’s Day gift I suggest you consider picture frames. They capture the moment by being able to lock it in time through a photo, then they provide memories for many years down the line.

Divine 70% Dark Chocolate Easter Egg 55g

I’ve tried the Divine Dark Chocolate Mini eggs and the Divine 70% Dark Chocolate Hearts in the past and absolutely loved the both. So it was no surprise that I thought this 70% Dark Chocolate Easter Egg was going similarly fantastic. The nice people at Divine Chocolate sent me this one before they’re available in the shops so I don’t know much about the pricing yet.

Dear Abby: Parents try to extort detailed accounting of wedding gifts

Dear Abby: Shortly before my wedding, I decided to have my teeth fixed. The dentist quoted me a price of $4,000, which my husband and I could not afford since we were paying for our entire wedding. My parents agreed to pay the dental bill as soon as it arrived

The peculiar urge to sack the England captain

Footballers are not entirely like the rest of us. Yesterday, in a Sky interview, the former England forward, Steve Bull, was talking about the former England goalkeeper, Bert Williams, who celebrated his 90th birthday on Sunday. “If I get to half that age,” said Bull, “I’ll be happy.” It turns out that Bull will be 45 on March 28.

Tories should be most afraid of their own fear

‘I feel as if I’m carrying a Ming vase across a very slippery floor,” a Shadow Cabinet minister told me recently. “I’m terrified I’m the one who’s going to drop it.” It was a metaphor first used by Roy Jenkins to describe Tony Blair in the run-up to the 1997 election but it now applies to David Cameron as well, as the country prepares to go to the polls again.

Ways to Stop Wasting Time Online

iStockphoto This weekend, each of the two times I sat down at my laptop to write this Juggle post, I had the best of intentions to bang it out in a few short minutes and move on to some other productive pursuit. Instead, each time I whiled away an embarrassingly long time playing word games on Facebook .

Is Workplace Advancement Gender Neutral? Men and Women Disagree

Most men and women agree that opportunities to get hired at the junior level are the same regardless of gender for equally qualified candidates, a new survey shows. Blair the dictator bulldozed us into war

We have been told by Sir John Chilcot himself that the Chilcot inquiry is not a trial, and that nobody will be either acquitted or found guilty; we all know that is not true. A public judgment is being made as each section of evidence is given. In particular a quiet judgment has been made of Tony Blair’s conduct.

After Avatar, movies will never be the same again

In a miracle of brains over brawn, Kathryn Bigelow has just become the first woman to win best director for her film The Hurt Locker, beating her ex-husband’s behemoth, Avatar. Bigelow’s unprecedented success at the Directors’ Guild of America Awards, which often predict the Oscar results, is a sign that cinema is in a thrilling state of flux.

Saving the planet or just toying with us?

I have suffered my first fit of consumer rage at being asked to pay 5p for a carrier bag. It happened while I was buying fairy figurines in the syrupy Hades that is The Disney Store. The assistant, in a pious, sing-songy “we’re all just trying to help the environment here” voice, announced that there was now a 5p charge for bags then suggested I upgrade by spending £1.50 on a “re-usable” carrier
