Lembit dumped and Jacqui ditched – what a top night

Congratulations to the voters of Montgomeryshire for that well-aimed meteor they sent crashing into Lembit Opik’s misshapen head: a huge, righteous swing of 13.2 per cent against the guitar-strumming Estonian loon. “There is perhaps a time,” the Welsh voters mused to themselves as they entered the polling booth, “when we would be reasonably happy to be represented by someone who monkeys around with crap Romanian pop stars and tries to sting us for his court fine

Cameron’s plan B for the Asda election

David Cameron has got what he wanted, but not in the way that he wanted it. Ever since he became leader of the Conservative party, Cameron had concentrated on appealing to the Liberal Democrats, and in particular to those who have voted for that party in recent elections.

Cut Scotland loose – then we’ll have a fair voting system

‘Wow,” said a wide-eyed young Liberal Democrat voter babe, staring over my shoulder on Friday at a coloured election map of Britain. “England is, like, totally blue.” How true. Huge swathes of England are Conservative.

Nick’s ready to dance – but to whose tune?

After the hung parliament comes an Alice in Wonderland moment, the lobster quadrille. “Will you, won’t you, join the dance?” sighs David Cameron to Nick Clegg. The Liberal Democrat leader is prepared to trip the light fantastic, but is his party willing to follow him onto the floor?

We broke the Perspex for pick’n’mix politics

As I cleared the teacups and blankets from my living room and brushed away the metallic unslept taste from my mouth, I was unexpectedly cheerful. Partly because I wasn’t watching, as dreaded, an endless TV loop of crowing George Osborne-a-likes clinking glasses of Veuve Clicquot on balconies, partying like it was 1979.

In the echoing halls of election night, it seems the rich aren’t that different

In the drab echoing halls where votes are counted, a hundred tiny moments cut through the muddle and tedium of the longest night and make you smile for democracy.

Voters must never be let down like this again

Casting a vote is one of the most important things we do in a democracy. The Electoral Commission campaigned in the run-up to the election with the slogan “Make sure nothing stops you voting”. Hundreds of thousands of people — many young, first-time voters — registered to vote as a result

Cameron’s hand is strong and he’ll play it well

There are worse places to be than the place where David Cameron finds himself this morning. One of them would be Gordon Brown’s place.

This wasn’t about apathy. More like antipathy

They were queuing around the block all over the country in order to vote. In some places, people waited for more than an hour to give their verdict on the political class; in others voters were locked out without having cast their ballots, as polling stations closed

We don’t need Big Brother to work out council taxes

I don’t know whether to be flattered or offended that officials at the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) are studying aerial photographs of my garden. Maybe they would like to come round next time the village has an “open gardens” day. I would love to show them the wild meadow effect I am creating beneath the cherry trees and the explosion of spring flowers on what used to be the concrete patio

Critics, change your tune – opera should be entertaining

I will never be accused of making the world a little more dull, a little more safe, a little more frigid; the boring qualities that human beings tend to gravitate towards, especially in the world of classical-music criticism. Don’t get me wrong, I deeply appreciate the scrutiny that Prima Donna, my new opera about a faded singer who longs for a triumphant return, has received

Nights in Prestatyn, never reaching the end

The main text of an election is written in public speeches, debates, polls and gaffes. Beneath these lie the unreported footnotes, the tangential asides, the below-stairs gossip, the small but revealing digressions and details that constitute a parallel campaign universe.

That Brit doesn’t know how to binge-drink

Strange, those unexpected stirrings of indignant patriotism. I had one yesterday, reading a news story about a wedding in Las Vegas. It wasn’t in a proper newspaper, like this one

Off with their heads! Soon the cuts will begin

They would like us to think that their inspiration is Barack Obama’s The Audacity of Hope. But in fact, as the country prepares to go to the polls, the political parties seem to have been more influenced by Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail.

Chambers hurricane expo had valuable information

Hurricane preparedness should be a topic of interest to all of us because we live in a low-lying coastal area. I attended the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce’s Hurricane Expo, and I want to congratulate Bill Miles and his staff for a job well done.
