Catching Up With The Conway's: Birthday Gifts From Missouri

Side Note: Mom wanted my gifts to have bows so she put the bows inside the box and instructed me to put the bows on the gift before I opened them. A birthday present is not complete without a cool curly bow. Notice that I would have to …

Business can’t rely on oil after Deep Horizon

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has already been described as the biggest environmental crisis in US history. The efforts to stop the leak, repair the damage to the ecosystem and compensate those whose livelihoods depend on clean waters will come at a tremendous cost to BP. We still don’t know what the final bill will be — or how BP and its reputation will manage.

Labour democracy is strangled by these unfair rules

Labour has a world-beating record on equality and diversity. We elected our first ethnic minority MPs more than 20 years ago. Positive action by Labour has pushed the number of women in Parliament to a record level.

Gaza’s waves will crash on Turkey’s shore

Somewhere, in some coastal briefing room, some Israeli officer must have told his colleagues of his plan for having commandos slide slowly, one at a time, on to the deck of a ship partially peopled — as Israeli sources had already warned — by fanatics who welcomed victory or martyrdom without discrimination. And somehow — intellects suspended — they must have agreed to what the novelist David Grossman, writing in the Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, described as the “insane operation” that left ten flotillistas dead.

The Unmentionable

In October 1964, on the Friday night after the Thursday general election, Harold Wilson, James Callaghan and George Brown decided that the new Labour Government would not devalue the currency. From that moment on, until the inevitable reversal of the decision, Tony Crosland referered to devaluation as “the unmentionable”

If you hunger for power, you must stay hungry

Where have all the powerful fatties gone? The City and Westminster used to groan under the weight of excess blubber. From the fleshy first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, to the most celebrated fat politico, Winston Churchill, portliness has never been a barrier to power — until now

Farewell, bird welfare: my handouts are withdrawn

A rather stern update, I fear, on worries expressed in this column before Christmas. I remarked then on the increasing reliance that blue tits seemed to be placing on my anti-squirrel birdseed dispensing machine in Derbyshire

Turn America around before it’s too late

A recent letter on how crucial this fall’s elections are to the future of our great nation was perhaps the most informative and accurate letter ever written to your paper. I remember when I was young how much honor and integrity meant and how America was looked up to and respected everywhere. We have come full circle, from the most respected and admired to the most hated, and it wasn’t necessary.

Prudential shareholders in rebellion? All power to their elbow

The finance industry is often seen as little more than a racket orchestrated by a self-serving elite. But yesterday’s seismic events at the Prudential may just point to capitalism working a tiny bit better, or at least forcing the agents of capitalism to be more accountable to the millions of people whose savings they harness.

Politicians forced to agree are forced to lie

One of Britain’s greatest sporting heroes was facing tough questions about the way his career had simply petered out in scandals and partying and tabloid headlines. “Just think what a great boxer you could have been if it hadn’t been for the women and the booze,” the interviewer said. “I don’t think you understand,” replied the boxer

Hilton Head airport future clearer with runway options

Airport consultants have offered up a two-part solution to Hilton Head Island Airport’s runway woes that could forestall a potentially divisive debate in the community. But some issues — noise, tree cutting — would remain and will have to be dealt with.

Why Britain is singing a different song for Europe

Have you noticed the way that our Eurovision contestants aren’t anything like anybody else’s Eurovision contestants? My favourites are the high-maintenance, pouting ones from dodgy Eastern countries, who, you always suspect, must be the daughters or mistresses of terrifying warlords.

High-dollar contract authorized for Racquet Club renovation

The Park City Council Thursday night, still perplexed with the overall municipal budget, authorized an $8.3 million deal to renovate the Racquet Club, unanimously agreeing to what will be one of the largest ever overhauls of a City Hall-owned building.

On the endangered list: free-range children

The opening words of Kipling’s public school novel Stalky & Co echo sadly today. “In summer,” he begins, “all right-minded boys built huts in the furze-hill behind the College — little lairs whittled out of the heart of the prickly bushes, full of stumps, odd root-ends and spikes, but, since they were strictly forbidden, palaces of delight.” Eheu fugaces, as their Beaks would say

Dennis Hopper: the rebel without a cause

He was the cowboy outlaw who blew smoke in the faces of the studio stuffed-shirts with his counter-cultural crossover hit, Easy Rider. He was the 18-year-old actor who idolised his co-star, James Dean, and counted him as his mentor

Voters bear responsibility in Treasurer’s Office woes

Only the voters of Beaufort County can remove treasurer Joy Logan or any other elected county official from office. We voters were responsible for placing our trust in her by electing her, and we voters will be responsible for keeping or not keeping her in office.
