Playing politics in a land of double Dutch

So many of the Dutch speak such near-perfect English that the tiny mistakes they do make can jar scarily — like when a Vulcan posing as a human gives the game away by a small but key failure to emote. Battling through the endless security checks, concrete barriers and razor-wire fences that must be negotiated before one gains access to any secure compound in Afghanistan, I was encouraged to see a spectacularly good-looking young Dutch soldier walking towards me with a most engaging smile.

Your Final Wishes: Low-Key Affair or Michael-Jackson-Style Memorial

Associated Press Michael Jackson’s public memorial service It’s been impossible to avoid the spectacle surrounding Michael Jackson’s untimely death and his celebrity-studded memorial service . But if there is anything positive about a high-profile passing, at least it brings up a subject most of us prefer not to dwell upon, but know we have to: death.

The Uighurs’ cry has echoed round the world

The massacre of Uighur demonstrators in the cities of Urumqi and Kashgar has been reported in every language, from English to Chinese to Portuguese to Arabic. While the intense repression against Uighurs is normally ignored by both the Chinese Government and the international media, the deaths of hundreds of protesters and the injuries of hundreds more has exposed the brutality of Chinese government actions toward Uighurs in a way that cannot be ignored

Back from Cali, knitting socks and staying off my feet…fun times!

Been awhile again since my last post.  I don’t know what it is, but I just can’t seem to find the time or the energy for the computer these days for some reason.  I can’t remember the last time I actually checked my email.  If anyone has sent me anything and I haven’t responded, sorry.  I’m more apt to see something you send me on Facebook or Twitter than I am in an email…LOL  Kind of sad, huh?!?! So I went to California on June 9th and stayed for 3 weeks.  Seeing my mother is always so great

Nasty cuts or nice cuts, there will be blood

A few weeks ago an extraordinary meeting took place that could determine the future of public spending in this country. The venue was a white stuccoed house in Carlton Gardens. The chairman was Sir Gus O’Donnell, the Cabinet Secretary. Under discussion was whether drastic cuts in expenditure — of up to 20 per cent — will be needed to tackle the spiralling deficit. In the room were senior officials from across Whitehall and Conservative frontbenchers — but not a single minister.

Birthday number 44

They come around once a year and they are absolutely unavoidable…birthdays I mean.  Mine happens to be today but I’m not a big birthday celebration person.  Gifts are terrific but not necessary.  Certainly not expected.  This year though G. decided to get me a bike.  I love cruisers.  No gears to mess with – if you’re shifting gears you’re probably workin’ too hard.  Or at least I am.  More often than not, now that I’m out of my sports competitive-ness years, a pleasant bike ride sounds like a

Costly, inefficient failures. Who needs them?

Cutting the size of government is now the only game in town — at least, for those who would like to prevent taxes rising to the point that there becomes little point in working or saving. Unless spending is put on a sharply declining path, the UK faces a decade of persistent deficits, stagnant growth and a steady loss of leadership to other, better founded economies across the globe.

Britain: a refuge for the unspeakably evil

What is it about arresting people for war crimes that the Government doesn’t like? After Iraq, you’d think an administration that may be in legacy mode would want to stamp some late-term legitimacy on its 12 years in office. But rumours are growing in Whitehall that Jack Straw is about to turn his back on bringing suspected mass murderers to justice in UK courts. Apparently ministers think it would be too expensive, or that it might offend our allies.

Preening populism has put us off democracy

Each to his own: you don’t go to Sir Alan Sugar for advice on diplomacy or plead with me to teach you breakdancing. And you wouldn’t, on the whole, go to Bernie Ecclestone for philosophical insight and mature historical reflection. Deafened by the vroom-vrooming of his horrid sport, wreathed in petrol fumes for 60 years and blinded by his billions, that strange, wizened little figure has generally stuck to what he knows: motors and money. Sure, he dazzled Tony Blair with his millions, but who didn’t?

Iran’s British stooges are staring right at you

Zahra, an Iranian woman studying at an English university, is in a state of terror. Her husband, an activist in the cause of the defeated Iranian presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, was arrested a fortnight ago, and has not been seen since. Zahra, whose eyes are lined in green, the colour of the country’s reformist opposition, told the BBC: “Why should he be in jail

Indulge your selfishness. Go and help someone

My friend L, for years a magazine editor of sharp tailoring and formidable repute, has been helping out her local hoodies. When introduced to these huge, surly, baseball-capped lunks, her first instinct was to flee. They were Neets — that growing pariah group of kids not in education, employment or training — with barely a GCSE between them. Nonetheless L had volunteered to help them to draw up CVs, so she rolled up her sleeves, as she put it, “to try to make s*** shine”.

In the fog, remember: victory is impossible in Afghanistan

It’s important not to understand. It’s important not to learn. In the total buggeration into which the world’s help for Afghanistan has now descended, it’s important not to know too much. Accept that somebody some day may understand, but it isn’t going to be you. Somebody some day may grab the Gordian knot and cut it, but it isn’t going to be us. Know only that. To know more is to know less.

I’ll pay 69p for a belt-tightening Queen

I was messing around on the internet the other day when I noticed a shop in Glasgow was selling inflatable crocodile riders for just 69p. They’re called crocodile “riders”, I discovered, because they’re sturdy enough for children to ride them across the swimming pool. Of course, I wasn’t able to check the quality of the product first-hand but nevertheless it did seem to be a bargain.

If the Government won’t learn, nor will children

It would be nice if education ministers had take the five-year MoT they propose for teachers — if any stayed long enough in the job. There’s definitely something wrong with the steering in the Education Department. This week’s Schools White Paper left me bewildered. I am a diligent student of bureaucratese, but I couldn’t decide if it was dangerous or anodyne, a U-turn or a bunny hop — until I realised that an important component seemed to have fallen off.
