Cali opens gifts the morning of her birthday from Great-Grandma Kloos and Grandma and Grandpa Doyle. She not too interested in the clothes when she opens them, but they are so cute on her, and she loves picking out stuff to wear in the mornings!

My property portfolio: off-the-shelf bargains

It was reported on Tuesday that the three-mile stretch of Cornish beach that inspired Virginia Woolf to write To The Lighthouse has been sold for £80,000. Fair enough. I’d certainly rather buy the beach than read the book. Just as I’d rather buy the florist at which Mrs Dalloway said that she would buy the flowers herself, than ever read on to find out whether the flowers got bought.

Let’s strike a blow, even a medal, for marriage

During their tempestuous nine-year courtship, my mother gave my father back his engagement ring which, with typical Yorkshire pragmatism, he sold and used the cash to buy a suit. They were reconciled but he never replaced the ring, so my mother didn’t get her diamond, although this week she did have her diamond wedding.

Swine flu is a real danger to children. But not a Dickensian one

The death of an apparently healthy six-year-old child has helped to put swine flu back on the front pages. The Health Protection Agency says that 5 to 14-year-olds remain the group predominately affected by the illness — 1 in 600 of them — 1,500 a day — went to their GPs with symptoms last week.

It’s time the law caught up with us over-65s

Retirement — the clock and the party when you’re 65 — is beginning to feel a bit out of date. I’ve long wanted it phased out, so that we can each negotiate our way out of the workforce in our own good time. How much better it would be if we could decide for ourselves how much energy and passion for work we still have. We all have different levels of skill and enthusiasm, and we all age at different rates. What has the number 65 got to do with it? Precious little.

They said I was selfish to head for the Outback

“My boy’s been found”, Richard Cass screamed at Sydney airport when told that his son had walked out of the Australian Bush after 12 days surviving in freezing conditions with only grass to eat. “I can’t say I’d kill him ... but I’m going to kick his arse. The millions that have been spent on this search, all because he goes out on a walk without his mobile phone.”

Chilis Coupons Make Great Birthday Gifts

I have quite a few friends and acquaintances, and it seems that it is always somebody’s birthday! I can’t afford to buy a present for everyone, but I do like to show them that their special day is important. I started buying cards and putting chilis coupons in them, that was they can go out to lunch or dinner at a later time, and enjoy some savings. Everyone likes to go there to eat, and this way they can go back several times and save money instead of just one meal

Great Games for the Couch Quaterback

For diehard football fans summer is a brutal time of year. EA Sports certainly feels for you and they do their best to scratch that football itch with the summer release of two must-have football games.  Yesterday, EA released NCAA Football 10 (Xbox360, PSP, PS2, and PS3), and next month, August 14th marks the arrival date for the rabidly anticipated Madden NFL 10 . NCAA Football 10 is a noted improvement of their already excellent college football franchise.

Money won’t buy you love. Or good marriages

Love and marriage, go together like a carriage and horse. Is that quite right? Does marriage plus a £20-a-week tax break equal love? Because if you could buy the quality that makes stable families, you would certainly buy love, not marriage. Where love and support are abundant, a family will flourish. Where they are absent, it will not.

The Americans know this will end in schism

In the slow-moving train crash of international Anglicanism, a decision taken in California has finally brought a large coach off the rails altogether. The House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church (TEC) in the United States has voted decisively to allow in principle the appointment, to all orders of ministry, of persons in active same-sex relationships

Pope Benedict is the man on the money

When Cardinal Ratzinger was elected Pope, his strengths and weaknesses seemed clear. Here was an eminent theologian, philosopher and guardian of Christian truth, but a man unlikely to make the Church’s message relevant to the world today. How simplistic this now looks in the light of his third encyclical, in which Pope Benedict XVI confronts head-on the financial crisis that has rocked the world.

This Bill is a panic measure in a tarnished age

I had the good fortune to see the House of Commons in the evening of its golden age in 1954. Winston Churchill was Prime Minister; Clement Attlee was Leader of the Opposition; Rab Butler was Chancellor of the Exchequer; Hugh Gaitskell was Shadow Chancellor; Nye Bevan was a leading Labour speaker; Herbert Morrison was Shadow Leader of the House; Anthony Eden was Foreign Secretary. Most of these men had worked together in the victorious wartime coalition and had respect and often affection for each other.

Deb’s Super-Duper SPECIAL Reading: The Cats; The Flame- Reversed; The Letter- Reversed

Uh-duh!  Moments of clarity come (for ourselves and others) thanks to the sacrifices we’ve made up until now.  Some really stupid moments come, too.  This will be a week in which we (pay attention Aries , Leo and Sagittarius ) will have to put a muzzle on our tempers.  However, on the bright side, we’ll have the support we need, and so any “bad” news we receive will be expected and, therefore, easier on the nerves than usual. I’ve drawn three cards from the ol’ deck, tonight.  Because I f
