With its usual self-serving incoherence, Gordon Brown’s government has come out, in the person of the Blairite MP Alan Milburn, in favour of “pushy parents”. Milburn’s report for Brown on social mobility found that “parental interest has four times more influence on attainment by the age of 16 than does socioeconomic background”.

I spent last weekend at the Latitude Festival in Suffolk. The experience completely restored my faith in festivals. I went to V a few years back and decided there that my festival-going days were behind me. It wasn’t really a festival at all — just an enormous gig. A festival, to me, is not just about which big-name acts are playing. I need some peace and love — a sense that people have left their anxieties and aggression at the gate and bought into a three-day idyll.
