South Indian Style Spicy Pumpkin Chutney. Hosting WHB # 206

The hot chutney is reminiscent of the Spicy South Indian cuisine. The intense flavors from the chili peppers and the fresh spices gives the bland pumpkins a whole new makeover.Adjust the quantity of spices and make it milder or hotter. With the abundance of fresh autumn pumpkins the chutney turned out to be one of the absolute tasty eats of the season. Recipe adapted from Anudivya’s Roasted Pie-Pumpkin chutney Ingredients 2 cups fresh Pumpkin Puree 1 small plum tomato, finely hopped (optional) 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds 2 green chillies or any other hot pepper 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 inch ginger root, minced 1/4 teaspoon turmeric 1/2 teaspoon Garam Masala (blend of cumin, coriander, cloves, cinnamon, bay leaf and cardamom) 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoon Extra virgin olive oil or Canola oil Method Heat the oil in deep pan or kadai on medium heat.Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds, after a minute when seeds starts to splutter, add the chillies, minced ginger and garlic, saute for a minute or two then add the tomatoes and rest of the spices.Cover and Cook until tomatoes are soft and mushy 4-5 minutes. Now mix in the pumpkin puree ,let cook for another 5-6 minutes.Blend in processor for smoother texture, this is optional I did not blend mine.Serve with plain brown rice , flat bread ,mix in pasta, Dosa , Idli or spread on sandwiches. The chutney can be stored in clean air tight container in refrigerator for 2-3 weeks. I’ll be hosting the Weekend Herb Blogging for the week.Share your unusual delicious foods.Talk about the one unique ingredient used and please keep the entries exclusive(cannot be sent to other food events). For more rules check here and send your entries to YasmeenHealthnut AT gmail DOT com.

13 days in to the fasting season, the Joy continues. It is the season that strengthens the faith, teaches patience, correct the negatives in character, care more for the less fortunate ,be thankful for the bounties and respect food. After long days thirst even a sip of water tastes sweetest. Me and Lubna are grateful to all the bloggers who have joined in the Joy of Fasting to Feasting (Season II) ,shared their perspectives and special food this Ramadan. ** Aysha at Life today prepared Haleem ,the most nutritious one pot meal. She uses barley and lentils besides the whole wheat to add to the heartiness of the meal. She also suggests substitute for meat – chickpeas and black eyed peas for vegetarian version of haleem.

Cupcake naming immortality awaits you

Help Jules Cupcakes name a vanilla cupcake! And do make sure to regularly check out our Flickr pool’s message boards for fun stuff like this, as well as if you have queries about cupcake baking or selling. I don’t have an exact photo of the vanilla cupcake in question, but these are chocolate and vanilla mini cupcakes by Jules Cupcakes (via Flickr ) that were too cute not to post: You can also email julescupcakes at yahoo.com and check out their site – it’s under CUPstruction!!! Fabulous. And another one to add to my October San Francisco cupcake tasting tour

Cupcake crawl snapshots

We wound up going to four bakeries on Saturday: Connie’s in Mount Kisco, Perfect Endings Bakery in Armonk (they were sadly out of cupcakes but had some fun giant cupcakes on display and other yummy stuff – plus they are doing the cake for the Cake Wrecks Barnes & Noble event in October, oh my!!), Dream Cakes Bakery in Cortlandt Manor and Flour & Sun Bakery in Plesantville. I can’t do justice to them all right now but in the interest of getting something posted (will blog more when I have time, sorry, plus post video interview from Flour & Sun), and also didn’t get to try all of the over 20 cupcakes we bought, but I will share some photos (have to get permission on the Perfect Endings photos, but can definitely say that they tied with Connie’s in the cuteness department – both had very fun, well-decorated, inviting atmospheres that went far beyond cupcakes): Inside the chocolate peanut butter cupcake from Connie’s – rich, gooey, delicious, good for sharing Cupcakes from Dream Cakes…that I didn’t get to try. I guess I’m a bad blogger but maybe my friend can report on how they were

Lady bird (or ladybug) cupcakes

These are by Flickr user pink4roxy2 – I was a little confused because she called these “lady bird cupcakes” but I only know these cute little animals as “ladybugs.” Wikipedia to the rescue: Coccinellidae is a family of beetles, known variously as ladybirds (British English, Australian English, South African English), ladybugs (North American English) or lady beetles (preferred by some scientists). Lesser-used names include ladyclock, lady cow, and lady fly.[1] Whatever you call them, they are adorable on cupcakes!

7,000 pound cupcake details – interview with GourmetGiftBaskets.com CEO Ryan Abood

On Monday, I spoke with Ryan Abood, the CEO of GourmetGiftBaskets.com, about his quest for the Guinness Book of World Records record for the world’s largest cupcake, a 7,000 pound cupcake to be unveiled this Saturday. He’s based in Manchester, New Hampshire and was on his way to Detroit, Michigan. I learned quite about the Guinness Book of World Records and can’t wait to see this truly outrageous-sounding cupcake.
