They know it’s all over bar the shouting

The Blair-Brown administrations have had 13 years of personal in-fighting. I recall a conversation with a senior civil servant in 1997, shortly after Labour came to power. He said that he did not know how Labour would work out “because they hate each other so much”.

When the Boss Has an Affair: Dealing With Tricky Ethical Situations at Work

Associated Press Office affairs are part of the job for the characters of “Mad Men.” A reader offended by her boss’s extramarital affair recently wrote my “Work & Family Mailbox” column asking for advice. Her question plunges right into the tangled intersection of ethics, law and personal boundaries, and the answer I provided was dissatisfying to some readers

The poor little mutt. But was it rude to stare?

Just when you thought that every imaginable etiquette question had been posed and answered, suddenly, from nowhere, just when you’re on holiday in the South of France and at least 1,000 miles from the nearest Debrett’s or glossy-mag advice page, a real rip-snorter leaps up and leaves you foundering, to wit: is it rude to stare at a disabled dog?

Preening populism has put us off democracy

Each to his own: you don’t go to Sir Alan Sugar for advice on diplomacy or plead with me to teach you breakdancing. And you wouldn’t, on the whole, go to Bernie Ecclestone for philosophical insight and mature historical reflection. Deafened by the vroom-vrooming of his horrid sport, wreathed in petrol fumes for 60 years and blinded by his billions, that strange, wizened little figure has generally stuck to what he knows: motors and money. Sure, he dazzled Tony Blair with his millions, but who didn’t?

“Womenomics:” You May Have More Workplace Leverage Than You Think

During the time years ago when I was constantly stressed-out over juggling a long-hours management job with raising two babies, I mostly kept my mouth shut because I had no idea how to ask for the flexibility I needed. If I could have read “Womenomics” back then, a new book just out from two TV journalists, I probably could have found my voice sooner. The message of “Womenomics,” by ABC News correspondent Claire Shipman and BBC World News America newswoman Katty Kay , is that skilled female workers have earned far more leverage at work than they’re using, by virtue of their educational credentials, experience and proven value in management.

From “Splash and Dash” to the Alphabet Song: Washing Hands More Effectively

Associated Press Elementary-school students washing their hands. I was out sick last week with a bad viral infection which led to high fevers, chills, headaches and the like.
