I am feeling a bit depressed today, Sunday was the 30th anniversary of the triumph of the revolution and they had big celebrations in managua and lots of rhetoric, but I am left feeling empty and sick when I look at the present sandinista government and its behaviour. BNP criticises Razzaq’s on Tipaimukh

Staff Reporter BNP yesterday rejected the statement of former water resources minister and presidium member of Awami League (AL) Abdur Razzaq to the effect that ‘BNP’s view on Tipaimukh dam is motivated and confusing’ made on July 19 at a press briefing. The party was taken with surprise that why did Razzaq make such type of statement just one day after BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia called upon national unity to resist India from constructing the proposed Tipaimukh dam as well as catered data and information about its bad impact on Bangladesh.

EC extends deadline, pending law change

bdnews24.com, Dhaka The Election Commission has decided to extend the deadline for parties to hold councils, and approve permanent constitutions, by another six months to Jan 25 next year, pending amendment of electoral laws. Chief election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda told reporters Tuesday the EC had requested the law ministry for amendment of the Representation of the People Order, to allow parties a full year from the first sitting of the current parliament on Jan 25 this year.

BB offers private sector to utilise surplus liquidity: Tk 500cr credit line dedicated to sharecroppers

UNB, Dhaka Bangladesh Bank threw a challenging offer to the private sector for aggressively coming up with investment proposals to utilize a huge surplus liquidity in the money-banking system and avail the monetary incentives on stake. “I put the challenge on your end, not our end,” Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman told his business audience at the monthly luncheon meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) at Hotel Sheraton.

Another Indian militant arrested in city

Staff Reporter Detective Branch (DB) of police has nabbed another alleged member of Kashmir-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba close on the heels of arrest of his compatriot and close associate Mufti Obaidullah. The DB of police disclosed the arrest of Indian national Moulana Mohammad Monsur Ali alias Maulana Habibullah at a press briefing at its office yesterday. Maulana Monsur was caught by the police from Madrasa- Tur-Rahmant at Saodagarbari in the city’s Dakkhin Kan area on Monday night following information from Mufti Obaidullah, a militant leader of India, who was arrested last week.

Jalil resigns as AL GS: I could not leave with dignity, he says

Staff Reporter Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil MP, stepped down from his post in the party, three days before its national council scheduled for July 24. He announced his resignation in a press conference at his Gulshan residence at about 11:35 am yesterday, frustrated over the party president’s “not allowing him to perform his duties” However, in an emotion-charged voice, Jalil pledged to continue with the politics of Awami League under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, as an ideal worker of Bangabandhu.

Bangladesh whitewash West Indies

UNB, Dhaka Bangladesh tasted the sweet smell of their maiden test-series win overseas as stand-in captain Shakib Al Hasan’s all-round performance led the front with 96 not out to beat the West Indies by four wickets in the second and final match in Grenada on Monday. An always-agile Shakib hit the winning runs in style with a six to seal a first-ever series win, amid cheers from a few Bangladeshis who were awoke late into the night at home. And as the news broke at daybreak, people of all walks of life and national leaders rejoiced and hailed the cricketers.

Dhaka keen to reopen cross-border railways closed in 1965: Hasina

UNB, Dhaka Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government is interested to reopen the cross-border railways abandoned following the 1965 India-Pakistan war, for stronger connectivity between Bangladesh and India in the fields of trade, investment and people-to-people contacts between the two next-door neighbours. She also sought Indian cooperation so that Bangladesh can transact trade and business through Banglabandh and Burimari land-port routes with Nepal and Bhutan. Routing trade between Bangladesh and the two landlocked Himalayan countries through the two northern land-ports necessitates corridors through Indian territories.
