In the fog, remember: victory is impossible in Afghanistan

It’s important not to understand. It’s important not to learn. In the total buggeration into which the world’s help for Afghanistan has now descended, it’s important not to know too much. Accept that somebody some day may understand, but it isn’t going to be you. Somebody some day may grab the Gordian knot and cut it, but it isn’t going to be us. Know only that. To know more is to know less.

Indulge your selfishness. Go and help someone

My friend L, for years a magazine editor of sharp tailoring and formidable repute, has been helping out her local hoodies. When introduced to these huge, surly, baseball-capped lunks, her first instinct was to flee. They were Neets — that growing pariah group of kids not in education, employment or training — with barely a GCSE between them. Nonetheless L had volunteered to help them to draw up CVs, so she rolled up her sleeves, as she put it, “to try to make s*** shine”.

Lunch bag cooler that helps women in the Philippines

Handmade for Bazura in a women’s cooperative in the Phillipines. The Lunch Bag Cooler  you see to the right is an Eco-Friendly, Fair Trade bag that members of this cooperative create by hand using recycled juice boxes. If the Government won’t learn, nor will children

It would be nice if education ministers had take the five-year MoT they propose for teachers — if any stayed long enough in the job. There’s definitely something wrong with the steering in the Education Department. This week’s Schools White Paper left me bewildered. I am a diligent student of bureaucratese, but I couldn’t decide if it was dangerous or anodyne, a U-turn or a bunny hop — until I realised that an important component seemed to have fallen off.

I’ll pay 69p for a belt-tightening Queen

I was messing around on the internet the other day when I noticed a shop in Glasgow was selling inflatable crocodile riders for just 69p. They’re called crocodile “riders”, I discovered, because they’re sturdy enough for children to ride them across the swimming pool. Of course, I wasn’t able to check the quality of the product first-hand but nevertheless it did seem to be a bargain.

38th Birthday – 2 Years ’till 40!

Today is my 38th birthday, and I guess it’s time for a bit of reflection.  38 is definitely in the “late thirties” category, yet I don’t feel that old at all.  I feel as though I’m in my late twenties, maybe.  I guess that’s because I don’t have a husband, children, or a mortgage, and all of those other things that go with being a responsible adult. Being young-at-heart runs in my family.  My dad just turned 69 and he doesn’t look it or act it at all.  He’s still so full of life and vigor, and

a birthday, a cat, and a ring.

Alright on with the engagement story shall we?  Well it started with a Valentine’s Day card last year in which Lance had written, “Don’t you think its time to start ring shopping?”….which led to a trip to a jewelry store to try on different rings …and me finally deciding on what I liked.  Then the wait began.  This really didn’t bother me actually, I guess in my mind we already were engaged in a way, the sparkly ring was just an added bonus to come. So fast forward to October…the morning of my

CHANGE FOR YOUR BUDGET: Regionalized service?: Town, schools get more creative to cut costs

As pressure on town and school operating budgets increases, Andover is looking at consolidating and regionalizing services to stay out of the red. The School Department also explored privatizing its custodial services this spring as a means of cutting costs, with the school custodians union agreeingd to contract concessions to help save jobs and ensure the schools would not hire a private cleaning company next year.

Why Vogue still wields such power

Vogue editor slams designers for tiny sizes! Vogue editor promotes paedophilia! Vogue editor wears same skirt almost twice! Honestly, sometimes you can’t open a paper or check your tweets without discovering what Anna Wintour really thinks of Michelle Obama, or whether French Vogue approves of, say, breathing. For God’s sake, a colleague inquired, genuinely flummoxed by the recent kerfuffle over sample sizes, does it still matter what the editors of Vogue say? Why does anyone care if they write a letter/hold a weekly weigh-in for their staff/ban the colour pistachio/publish an all-black model issue

Brown is in denial. The public expect cuts

Two of the most familiar aphorisms in progressive politics are Nye Bevan’s famous comment that “socialism is the language of priorities” and the age-old cliché that “to govern is to choose”. Now Gordon Brown has brought these hoary old slogans up to date for the age of post-Blairite new Labour. For Mr Brown today, socialism is the language of pretences and to govern is to cheat.

Review: Pathfinder #7 – Edge of Anarchy

Introduction This is the first installment of the Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path, and I will be writing up reviews on all six parts with a final wrap up, very similar to what I did on first Adventure Path series. This adventure path returns to Varisa and centers around the city of Korvosal, with its troubled monarchy. It is interesting that I just blogged a bit about Cersei from Martin’s work, as there is some similarities between the two Queens.

Who’s in da DAMN House Wednesday? – Mango Girl

Introduction by our own Lindaloohoo: Today we bring you another special treat.  It’s sweet.  It’s juicy.  It’s Mango Girl .   There are lots of reasons to love mah Mango, as I like to call her.  Aside from the fact that she is mom to a great son named Pitcher and she’s an amazing artist, with a potters wheel and a paintbrush, she also has an icon on her blog called ‘Today’s Reason To Drink.’  (As if I need a reason.  Still, an excuse is sometimes called for.)  And the coolness does

Did Cheryl have a happy birthday?

Posted by Jane Murphy   Been wondering how Queen of Everything Cheryl Cole spent her 26th birthday yesterday? Well, I’ll tell you… She indulged in “a major piece of backcombing” to create a “bouffant semi up-do” (phrasing courtesy of our friends at the Daily Mail ) – then set off for the X Factor auditions at the ICC Arena in Birmingham, where she was presented with a bouquet before starting work. Still, at least our Chezza was among friends on her special day.
