How can I make it clear if I've really got to go?

The British have developed an elaborate yet widely understood code that allows the terrible truth to be hinted at without giving gratuitous offence. “That looks very comfortable,” applied to any item of clothing, means it would be rejected by most tramps as inconsistent with their dignity.

It's ridiculous to pretend there won't be cuts

There is a moment in Nineteen Eighty-Four when Winston Smith realises that “in the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it...the logic of their position demanded it”. The Labour Party reached that moment last Wednesday when Gordon Brown told it that his plans to cut real spending on public services and halve capital spending equalled more “Labour investment”.

Opposition boycott continues: JS discusses supplementary budget, lauds proposed new budget

Staff Reporter General discussions on supplementary budget 2008-2009 started at Jatiya Sangsad yesterday in the absence of the opposition lawmakers who are abstaining from the House demanding more seats in the front row. In the one-sided discussion, the treasury bench members expressed mixed reactions on the rationale and purposeful utilisation of allocated money and overall performances of the caretaker government. They were highly critical of the opposition’s boycott of parliament, which they said tantamounts to ignoring of people’s verdict and irresponsibility on their part.

Ramsay keeps our misogyny simmering away

I am amused by the idea that Australia should have felt its pristine soul sullied and its politically correct sensibility scandalised last week by the misogynistic pronouncements of one mouthy Brit. That’s the claim, at any rate. Last time I looked, Australia had its own impressive line in misogyny – and the rest

Ben’s murder was not racist – just a matter of statistics

Perhaps it will come as a vague consolation to the parents of Ben Kinsella that he was not murdered for racial reasons, but simply because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, as they say. Ben, aged 16, who was white, was stabbed to death by three black men near a nightclub in north London; there was no apparent motive for the murder

Quote of the day

To claim that girls and women want to look like blonde bombshells because of the billboards, movies, TV shows, music videos, and magazine advertisements makes as little sense as to claim that people become hungry because they are bombarded with images of food in the media. If only the media would stop inundating people with images of food, they would never be hungry! Women’s desire to be blonde preceded the media by centuries, if not millennia. – Ben Casnocha , in his notes on Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters , by Alan Miller and Satoshi Kanazawa.

What Does Boston Mean To You?

Last night I attended a fabulous Christofle event celebrating the opening of their store on Boylston Street. Positioned across from Boston Common and in between the eye-catching turquoise canopies that provide entry for some of the most luxurious boutiques Boston has to offer, Christofle is certainly one store you don’t want to miss. Upon entering, I was met with a stunning collection of sterling silver jewelry, flatware, serving platters, and an assortment of decadent home accessories that would add Parisian elegance to any space.

Now even Vogue thinks you can be too thin

In New York last week I attended my first catwalk fashion show. I found the bubbling backstage hysteria, unfathomable lateness, social anxiety about who was sitting where, that grave frivolity when frocks meet finance, all pretty much as billed. But the girls! Truly, nothing prepares you for being within touching range of models performing that absurd dressage prance.

Don't mention the rabbit. Or that word ‘cut'

On a French government ship I was once mightily perplexed by something I at first supposed a joke – but which wasn’t. You must not say lapin (rabbit), I was told by passengers and crew. You can make a big-ears gesture, or say grandes oreilles, but the word itself will bring misfortune

Fright – the F-word that explains Ramsay

Let's be careful what we do now with Gordon Ramsay, because it is we who made him. We, the consumers as much as the creators of the Gordon Ramsay product, made this monstrous, embarrassing, foul-mouthed, only half-true media behemoth out of a decent man who happened to be good at cooking, and now that it looks like the wheels are coming off, I think it behoves us to tread carefully, and not just cast him into the pit, dust off our hands, and move on to Heston or Marco or whichever other pan-juggler we want to fatten into a global megabrand and then slaughter.

Air Writing: Your Killer Mobile App?

This one is still a bit far off, but a prototype of a new mobile app lets cell phone users write short messages in the air and send them to an e-mail address, reports Live Science . The idea is that instead of having to text someone, or take out a stylus, you could simply hold your cell phone like a pen and just “write” the note or even draw simple diagrams, said Sandip Agrawal, an electrical and computer engineering student at Duke University in North Carolina, in the report. The air wri

50. Wedding Anniversary Speech – After 50 Years Together

Giving a speech after 50 years of marriage I would be very easy, but expressing your emotions after 50 years is not always easy, sometimes it will be more difficult because the emotion becomes stronger, deeper, and more complex. What is your husband or wife or dear friend who want to make a speech, it can be difficult to find the right words to say that encapsulate a love that has been able to survive 50 years of marriage. If You Are One of the pair If you are one of the husband or wife, yo
