Drop the noble platitudes, what’s in it for me?

This latest turn in the tale of our MPs’ expenses is intolerable. What blithering, blethering idiots. Have the Commons authorities and their black ink contrived deliberately to twist the knife into these pathetic parliamentarians? Now the MPs mumble something about being warned by the authorities that if they had stuck their necks out and published their uncensored expenses independently they’d be infringing the Data Protection Act.

Dismantle the sunbed. Scribble ‘he is dead’

Someday soon, lying naked on a glass bed having ultraviolet rays ten times more powerful than our sun bake your epidermis will appear in the Bonkers Book of Beauty along with Elizabethans whitening their faces with lead. Someday soon, I hope, people will no more spend their leisure time being radiated in high street outlets called Tanz In ’Ere or Sun of the Beach than they would take a dip in the cooling pool of a nuclear power plant.

You can’t win ‘em all

For all the striving to find good, nay, great , gifts – sometimes one’s best efforts just don’t cut it. I learned the hard way a couple of years ago. A friend’s birthday was coming up.  She is into scriptwriting and film, so I had the idea of getting a ‘first day cover’ – one of those special envelopes the post office issues on the first day of a new series of stamps being issued – of a new stamp series commemorating great movies of the past hundred years.  Then I had the envelope frame

Govt warned against diversion of public fund in name of PPP

Staff Reporter Veteran Awami League lawmaker Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir yesterday cautioned the government against amassing public fund by the private entrepreneurs while implementing projects under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mechanism proposed in the national budget. Participating in general discussion on the 2009-2010 national budget he said the government must take care about the public and private investment so the money is not wasted as it is seen that “in the name of equal capital, money was looted indiscriminately during the previous alliance government and the caretaker government”.

Healthcare, not bailouts, could break America

While British voters can look forward only to the squirming of a lame-duck Prime Minister and a discredited House of Commons, America is starting one of the most important policy debates in its modern history. Barack Obama describes his promise to create a system of healthcare that would guarantee to all Americans the basic medical treatment taken for granted in other advanced democracies around the world as the defining issue of his presidency.

“Womenomics:” You May Have More Workplace Leverage Than You Think

During the time years ago when I was constantly stressed-out over juggling a long-hours management job with raising two babies, I mostly kept my mouth shut because I had no idea how to ask for the flexibility I needed. If I could have read “Womenomics” back then, a new book just out from two TV journalists, I probably could have found my voice sooner. The message of “Womenomics,” by ABC News correspondent Claire Shipman and BBC World News America newswoman Katty Kay , is that skilled female workers have earned far more leverage at work than they’re using, by virtue of their educational credentials, experience and proven value in management.
