Even if it's all in public, they'll cry whitewash

It's a fun day for Sir John Chilcot, because he will get to meet both Nick Clegg and David Cameron to talk about his inquiry into the Iraq War. He will find them, I am sure, wanting nothing that is not best for the country, or that would be unconducive for the learning of important lessons.

Labour hamstrung by broken treaty promise

I doubt whether Gordon Brown's interview with The Guardian was intended to smoothe the way for his early retirement, but it has been taken that way, particularly by other newspapers. There was a note of regret in what he said. “It wouldn't worry me if I never returned to any of those places – Downing Street, Chequers.” His interview would fit in with preparation for an early resignation, if that became necessary; experienced politicians like to create options for themselves that they will not necessarily take.

If they asked proper questions, MPs might get propers answers

MPs, most of whom regard the promise of “transparency” as essential to every speech, will today elect a new Speaker – by secret ballot. The paradox is justified by the explanation that only anonymity can prevent the party whips imposing an unsuitable candidate on a reluctant House of Commons.

MPs must be told what we expect before trust can blossom again

The phrase “crisis of trust” had become a cliché long before voters learnt that their MPs expected them to pay for their pot plants and accountancy bills. Two years ago, when Gordon Brown became Prime Minister, building trust in government was on his list of promises, right after health, schools and housing

The Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi spent her 64th birthday in prison today sharing biryani rice and chocolate cake with her guards, according to aides. As campaigners around the world staged protests agitating for her release, the Nobel laureate invited doctors and guards to a modest birthday gathering at Yangon’s Insein prison, where she is on trial and faces up to five years in jail if found guilty of violating her house arrest.

Let the Fragrance Speak – Perfumes as a Gift Idea

“I send thee this sweet perfume a fragrance to the fragrant, as one would offer wine to the god of wine”(Anon)When fragrance speaks, the words get lured.  This is why perfumes are considered as one of the best gifts for different occasions – be it Birthday, Anniversary or Wedding Day.  The magical fragrance of a well prepared perfume can guide our senses to a mystic land, where we can only think of leading our life in a romantic way.  If the fragrance of a particular perfume matches the personal

Here’s the forecast: the Met Office will get it wrong, again

It’s a beautiful day outside; clear blue sky, scarcely the whisper of a breeze, temperature hovering around a gently cossetting 20C, greenfinch wheezing away nearby. This is good news for me because as soon as I finish this article I intend to spend the rest of the day under the horse chestnut tree with a pitcher of neat alcohol. But it is also good news for Britain and the rest of the world

HC judgement on independence proclamation case today

UNB, Dhaka The High Court is likely to deliver judgment today (Sunday) on a writ petition that challenged the validity of the past BNP-led alliance regime’s action introducing Maj Ziaur Rahman over three decades as the proclaimer of Bangladesh’s independence. Advocate Manzill Murshid, counsel for the writ petitioner, told UNB about the possible verdict after browsing Sunday’s HC cause list. A chapter was interpolated into the History of Bangladesh War of Liberation through its June 2004 edition on a new thought that Maj Ziaur Rahman made the declaration of independence on March 26, 1971.

Action plan for speedy implementation of Tipaimukh project

Staff Reporter In spite of there being strong opposition from various sections inside and outside India against the proposed Tipaimukh Dam Project, the Manipur state government of India has formulated special proposed vehicle (SPV) for speedy implementation of the project, said Imphal Free Press. Ignoring strong opposition from Bangladesh and Indian Manipur state people, a state high powered meeting has recently chalked out the action plan for the speedy implementations of 1500 MW Tipaimukh project in the state following the environment clearance by the Ministry of Forest and Environment as recommended by the State Forest Department through Regional Chief Conservator of Forest, RCCF, Shillong.

Biman fails to procure aircraft for Hajj pilgrims

UNB, Dhaka The government move to ensure smoother operation of Hajj flights this year appears to face a setback as Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited has failed to add any leased aircraft to its fleet for that particular period. On March this year, Biman floated a Request for Proposal (RFP) to add a Boeing 747 aircraft to its fleet under Aircraft Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (ACMI) wet lease system to strengthen its services during the Hajj period. But the move appears fruitless as the national flag carrier got a very poor response from Airlines/Operators/Owners of Aircraft/Leasing Companies.
