The fans killed their idol. They always do

Outside UCLA hospital they gather with their candles and their teddies, spooky lookalikes in full Thriller garb, wan teenagers wearing a single lace glove. They sway and sing I’ll Be There with sad faces to disguise the serotonin buzz from their frenzied collective mourn-in. Fans cry now for Michael Jackson, but they killed him. They always do.

Bore for Britain, Dave. It’s your national duty

There’s a rude word that won’t appear in this column. As a child your columnist was taught to avoid it. The word begins with l, and the three-letter version means untruth. The four-letter version describes someone who habitually tells untruths. These terms should hang in the air, on the tip of my argument’s tongue, tantalisingly unarticulated. They should hang unvoiced, too, above the figure of our present Prime Minister.

Candidate for Ward 2 seat urges residents to go to polls June 30

With six candidates competing for the Ward 2 Town Council position, voters must choose from a fairly large field and each of us has brought a unique perspective to the campaign. I would like to say how proud I am to be a part of the Hilton Head Island community and how honored that I am to be running for this office. I gave careful consideration to the importance of this position when I decided to run and I did so because I care deeply about the Hilton Head Island community.

Women, West Brom, the burka and me

I was once asked if I'd like to be the mascot at a West Bromwich Albion football match. It involved me having to wear a large thrush costume. I mean, of course, the bird. It wasn't some tasteless promotional event where I was dressed as an irritating rash and then seized upon by a man dressed as a tube of Canesten.

Today's tragic victim, tomorrow's feral brat

Frankly, it's distressing how illogical we are about cruelty to children. Remember the national spasm of grief when we saw that smudgy picture of Baby P: the blond curls, the wistful expression? We grieved like sentimental saps, gripped by the thought of the poor soul dying in agony, unloved and abused. And we hugged our own children tighter, congratulating ourselves that they would never experience anything like Peter's brief, terrible existence. I did it; every mother did it. It was a kind of surreptitious mother porn.

Ed Balls, you can't win by banning competition

What one word would you use to describe yourself? This is the question that a highly selective London prep school asks children who come for an interview. Many of the seven-year-olds, perfectly tutored, say “clever”. It's far more interesting to ask adults. One CEO simply said “rich”. For others it's wishful thinking; a high-powered lawyer replied “mother”.

Unplanned Parenthood: When the Baby is a “Little Surprise”

Getty Images When unplanned babies are born, some families joke about it, calling the child a “little surprise.” I was the third and youngest child in my family, and my parents sometimes laughed in a good-natured way about the fact that they hadn’t planned on having me. Now, new research suggests children who aren’t planned, or who didn’t arrive at the time their parents expected, receive less warm, nurturing parental time, as well as fewer books and other learning materials in the home.

Everyone's crying out for change. Except MPs

John Bercow was out campaigning with his one-year-old daughter in the Portcullis House coffee shop at the House of Commons yesterday morning — a new man promising to be the “clean break” candidate in the race to be elected House of Commons Speaker. “We need change,” he told MPs, as he set out his plans to push through “an agenda for reform and renewal”. He wants a new expenses system, more independent scrutiny of legislation — and an enhanced role as an ambassador for Parliament, explaining the mysteries of politics to the outside world
