Two pop thinkers and their fight about zero

There was a life before the internet. It’s hard to imagine now, but when people wanted to find stuff out or read things, they had to stand up, walk to a bookshelf and brush away the dust. And, get this, people would, once upon a time, expect to pay for the movies they watched, the books they read or music they listened to.

Home ownership for all is a low-rent idea

In 1986, as the general election neared, the Conservatives organised a photo call to celebrate their biggest domestic achievement. Margaret Thatcher handed a delighted family in Aberdeen the keys of the millionth council house purchased under right-to-buy. The image symbolised a truism of modern British politics — expanding home ownership is good for society and good for politicians.

Scottish or British? What a dumb question

There was a stunning moment, late on Monday night, inside the illuminated spaceship that was Wimbledon with its new roof closed, when it seemed that Andy Murray had lost the game. A barrelling cross-court shot had gone long, and the cameras turned to the crowd for their reaction. If they had been auditioning for a tragic death scene on EastEnders they could not have done better. Jaws sagged open, hands clutched gaping mouths, eyes widened in horror.

The Best Christmas Gift You Can Give Yourself or Anyone Else: Simplicity

I had to laugh when I read that quote recently. I particularly remember a time in my merry life when I had two sons, 3 dogs, my clothes filled two closets in my home, I owned Madeleine pans, exotic juicers, a regular and a gourmet coffeemaker, 3 sets of flatware, 10 tableclothes, 10 sets of placemats for 6 or 8, and formal china tablesettings for 12 and most cluttering of all, a social calendar that was unmanageable. Life is a series of stages, and there is the acquiring stage.

The Blacks Who Cried Post-Racial Racism by Afrocity

The following post was originally posted at Afrocity’s Blog Autographed Letter Signed A shepherd-boy, who watched a flock of sheep near a village, brought out the villagers three or four times by crying out, “Wolf! Wolf!” and when his neighbors came to help him, laughed at them for their pains. The Wolf, however, did truly come at last. The Shepherd-boy, now really alarmed, shouted in an agony of terror: “Pray, do come and help me; the Wolf is killing the sheep”; but no one paid any heed to his

Govt wants to make one-party parliament: BNP

UNB, Dhaka Main opposition BNP on Tuesday condemned what they called government’s mentality to turn the parliament into a one-party parliament as reflected through a senior ruling-party leader’s recent statement asking the absentee opposition lawmakers to resign. Addressing a press briefing of the BNP Parliamentary Party at the Media Centre of Parliament at noon opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque said the ruling party should not forget that government’s lifespan and existence become uncertain if parliament runs sans opposition.

The Cold War is over. We must move on, fast

These are challenging times. As government tries to deal with the fallout from the global financial crisis, the tightest fiscal conditions for decades and the collapse of trust in politicians and politics, the last thing it wants to hear is warnings of growing threats to our national security. But hear them it must, and act on them.

Berlusconi should not be leading the G8

Silvio Berlusconi was born in 1936, the same year that Hitler hosted the Summer Olympics. It would be fair to say that the bevy of women now talking of their steamy nights with the Italian leader probably don’t even remember Italia 90, let alone anything pre-Anschluss. And so the Commedia dell’Arte rumbles on, with Mr Berlusconi’s lawyer playing the unlicensed court fool.

Should You Buy Your Child a Car For Graduation?

Associated Press Graduation means a new car for some kids. Whenever I read about parents who buy their children a major gift — such as a car for graduation — an old memory pops into my head. A longtime friend, who grew up in poverty but later made a small fortune as a hard-working adult, gave his two children everything he’d wanted as a kid – new sports cars and expensive clothes and vacations.

The House of Commons is in danger of cutting its own constitutional throat, but the Clerk of the House is trying to stop them. The clerk is Malcolm Jack, a man of scholarship and courage who is the ultimate referee on all constitutional questions which affect the Commons. His core duty is to advise the House, its Speaker, the committees and MPs on the practice and procedure of the House, and its rights.
